Drag racing has been around for almost as long as cars themselves. The sport has garnered popularity as a display of the quickest and most beastly vehicles out there directly competing one against the other to prove which one is the quickest. However, in a drag race, it's not just about having the biggest and most powerful engine; it's about properly warming up your tires, having the right aerodynamics, and being really quick. These races are also very short, with the most common drag strip being a 1/4 mile.
Drag races are also a gearhead-favorite, as being able to engineer the quickest car directly translates to success in this sport. And leaving your opponent in the dust is one of the most rewarding race experiences out there. As gearheads, today we are counting the 10 production cars we think would be the coolest and most successful additions to any drag strip. Enjoy!
10 2018 Dodge Challenger Demon
When it was unveiled in 2008, the third generation of Challenger was truly a worthy successor to the legendary American Muscle car. However, Dodge decided that was not enough and, in order to compete with the big boys, decided to up the antee by introducing the extreme Challenger SRT Demon in 2017. Weighing in at 4,254 lbs, the car shocked the automotive community having become the quickest production vehicle ever created. It's practically designed as a road-legal dragster, with a claimed manufacturer 0-60 time of just 2.3 seconds (and astonishing 2.1 seconds from a rolling start). With this in mind, it also looks plain cool, bulky, red, and aggressive. No drag competition would be complete without one of these.
9 Bugatti Chiron
it may not be a muscle car, nor is it a vehicle you will usually see on a drag strip. Let's be honest: it's simply too extravagant and expensive for that. However, we have to give it to Bugatti for creating the most beastly and impressive gas-powered hypercar on the planet.
With that in mind, the Chiron would actually be and excellent dragster, with its W16, 1500-horsepower engine connecting to all four wheels able to launch it to 60 mph in under 2.5 seconds, and continue to accelerate to an unknown top speed that surely eclipses 260 mph. Aside from that, it's absolutely beautiful as well.
8 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk
We know that this is a full-size SUV, but bear with us for a second. The Grand Cherokee is also absolutely mind-bogglingly fast. It features the same engine found in the Dodge SRT Hellcat - a 707 horsepower V8 that's able to launch this large car to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds.
How ridiculous is that!? Given it's downright quicker than a Lamborghini Murcielago, seeing a badass SUV being competitive on a drag strip would be nothing short of awesome.
7 2019 Shelby Super Snake
The legend began when Caroll Shelby decided to upgrade the 1967 Mustang GT500 with best and most advanced parts from cars used in the Le Mans in order to create a beast like no other, and he called it the Super Snake. Fast forward 51 years and the new 2018 Shelby Super Snake manages to live up to its name by taking the regular mustang to the extreme.
It's 5.0L V8 is supercharged to produce an incredible 800 horsepower. As a custom American supercar, the Super Snake has always been perfect choice for a dragster, with it's RWD powertrain being able to launch it to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, easily reaching a top speed of over 200 mph.
6 Lamborghini Aventador SVJ
While this Italian luxury supercar is not your typical dragster, the Aventador SVJ is frighteningly fast and leaves a mean rear end to stare at as it leaves you in the dust. The SV stands for "Super Veloce," which would translate to Super Fast, as the Aventador SVJ is the quickest and most powerful production Lamborghini ever created. One glance is enough to know that this is no ordinary Aventador: With the SVJ, the Aventador's body was completely re-engineered for more downforce, better cooling and aerodynamics, featuring massive side vents, additional front vents, and an aggressive rear wing.
Not only does it look cool, but it drives the part. Inside it is a natrally-aspirated V12 churning out 770 horsepower, launching the car to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds, with a top speed estimated at over 220 mph. A part of a dying breed of badass-looking mid-engine supercars, this beast would be a sight to behold on a drag strip.
5 Tesla Model S P100D
This may seem like a family car, but we think every gearhead si by now aware of the ferocity of tesla's all-electric engine. This midsize sedan is able to accelerate to 60 mph faster than a $2.4 million Bugatti Chiron!
Let that sink in for a minute. While it launches you to absurd speeds in a matter of seconds, you will hear nothing but the howling of the wind thanks to the silent quality of an electric engine, which may be a bit anti-climactic in a drag race, but is nevertheless downright cool.
4 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1
Chevy's flagship supercar looks leaner and meaner than ever with the 2019 model year. Featuring a 6.2L V8 churning out 755 horsepower, the ZR1 is able to rocket itself to 60 mph in just 2.85 seconds, acquiring a top speed of 212 mph. Heck, it can even slaughter a Demon on the dragstrip. Don't believe us? Check out the ZR1 going head to head with the Dodge's alleged drag king. Not only can it compete with the fastest supercars on the planet with such acceleration, but it's aggressive design with large gaping vents in the front and quad exhaust pipes in the rear paired with a massive wing make it quite easy on the eye as well.
3 Rimac Concept_One
We are putting this one in here just so the Tesla has something to compete with. This relatively young Croatian company actually managed to deliver an amazing hypercar that's already caused a lot of fuss in the automotive community with its incredible performance and beautiful design.
While we're waiting for a 1900-horsepower second addition to the Rimac family, the first model dubbed the Concept One still delivers an impressive 1224 horsepower courtesy of its four all-electric engines, with a 0-60 time of just 2.5 seconds.
2 Ferrari 812 Superfast
They don't call it Superfast for nothing. The 812 moves away from the standard mid-engine Ferrari design and fits its massive 6.3L V12 developing 788 horsepower and 530 lb-ft of twisting power underneath the front hood.
Believe it or not, tied with the beastly LaFerrari, this car is also the quickest production Ferrari to ever come out of the Maranello factory, boasting a 0-60 time of just 2.8 seconds. This should give it plenty of bite in a drag race. Also, how cool would ti be to have a front-engine ferrari wipe the floor with modern supercars again like the company's legendary Le Mans models did back in the 1960s?
1 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
Yes, it's another American muscle car. But we really have to again give it out to Dodge for creating one of the coolest cars ever. The Hellcat has made a reputation for itself due to its incredible performance and high cool-factor. It's among the world's fastest and quickest production sedans, with a 0-60 of just 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph, courtesy of a 707-horsepower HEMI engine. It is also capable of doing a quarter mile run in under 11 seconds, straight out of the factory, now think of what it could do with some weight reduction and drag tires alone.
