Without a doubt, the Los Angeles Lakers are one of the most formidable and prominent teams in the history of the NBA. Back then, they were known as the Detroit Gems and were playing in the National Basketball League (NBL). It was when the team made a move to Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1947 that the team’s name was changed to Lakers since Minnesota is known as the “land of 10,000 lakes.” And during its first ever season in the NBL, this team ended up taking the championship.

Since then, the Lakers have been continuously establishing their reputation as the team to beat in basketball. Over the years, the Lakers have managed to make as many as 60 playoff appearances and 31 finals appearances, according to the NBA. More importantly, the team has also secured as many as 10 championship rings. These were in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1988, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009 and 2010.

Over the years, the Lakers featured players that are unstoppable on the basketball court. These included the likes of Jerry West, James Worthy, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, Gail Goodrich, Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Jamaal Wilkes, Shaquille O’Neal and of course, Kobe Bryant.
