Imagine this: you're on your way to work or running a weekly errand. You're cruising along and jamming out to your favorite song on the radio. All of a sudden, you see those flashing lights in your rearview mirror and suddenly get nervous. You try to figure out what it is you could have done wrong. Are one of your tail lights out? Were you speeding? What could possibly be the problem?

You pull your car over and start rummaging for the insurance and registration—you know the officer will ask for it as soon as they reach your window. The officer gets out of the car, they approach your driver side window and the interrogation begins; it's awkward getting in trouble with the law. It's likely going to result in a ticket and having to pay some fine you really don't have the money for.

Getting pulled over is never fun, but it's something we all go through. Even though we all get a ticket at one point or another, it makes you wonder which cars are going to be ticketed most often and which ones the least. “It’s the driver that gets tickets, not the car,” says Penny Gusner, consumer analyst for Insurance.com. “But it is interesting to see what vehicle makes and models attract drivers who are prone to traffic violations.” (Forbes)

Here's a list of the 15 most and 10 least ticketed vehicles, as reported by Forbes. It's an interesting mix that may surprise you. (This list was comprised from research that was done by Insurance.com from January 2014 until February 2016).

25 Most Ticketed: Subaru Impreza 2.5I

via www.youtube.com

This is the fifteenth most ticketed car to appear on Insurance.com. The Subaru vehicles are well known for their family-friendly engineering and versatile all-wheel drive. The Impreza models are one of the few "sports cars" Subaru produced. It's also one of only two "sports cars" to make the top 15 (and many people don't really consider this a sports car). These cars are great in the snow, come with a fuel efficient four-cylinder engine and only 175 horsepower.

24 Most Ticketed: Mazda 3i

via www.caranddriver.com

These 4-door vehicles come in both sedan and hatchback models. They're great family cars that get anywhere between 30 and 40 miles per gallon. They also come with two different inline four-cylinder options as well: the 2.0 or 2.5. They have 155 and 185 horsepower respectively. This is not the kind of car that's going to jump out at people as a ticket magnet. Apparently, however, owners seem to drive them as though there's an imaginary V-8 under the hood. These are fun cars with great body lines, but they don't really have enough power to suggest they're "speeding tickets waiting to happen."

23 Most Ticketed: Ford Fusion S

via www.autoblog.com

There are three options for the Ford Fusion: the S, SE, and the Titanium. The S is the base model that comes with a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine. These engines produce 175 horsepower, which pales in comparison to what Ford is capable of. A buyer would have to upgrade to the SE trim models in order to be able to have a turbocharged engine under the hood. Maybe these drivers wish they were behind the wheel of a Mustang, and their car made it on the list of 15 most ticketed vehicles.

22 Most Ticketed: Lincoln LS

via www.pinterest.com

The Lincoln LS was a sedan model produced from 2000 until 2006. This is a vehicle that isn't even in production anymore, but almost 10 years after their production discontinued, they made the list. When you look at what's under the hood, this vehicle makes more sense than some of the others; still, the engine specs don't jump out as being anything spectacular with regards to being a fast car. They came with a 3.9-liter V8 motor capable of 280 horsepower and a 3.0-liter V6 that could put out just over 230 horsepower.

21 Most Ticketed: Mercedes Benz C300 4Matic

via www.autoweek.com

Most people would expect a Mercedes Benz to be the type of vehicle on this list because of their performance. When people think of a Mercedes, they think of the German engineering they exude, which allows them to stand out as one of the top luxury brands on the market. This particular model, however, doesn't have the kind of engine people commonly associate with Mercedes. The C300 4Matic comes with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces around 240 horsepower. This car took the eleventh spot as the most ticketed vehicle on the Insurance.com list.

20 Most Ticketed: Toyota Tacoma

via www.silverarrowcars.com

This is the only truck to make it on the top 15 list. Most expect a Dodge, Ford or even a Chevrolet, but Toyota is a surprise. These trucks come with different engine options that include an inline, 2.7-liter, four-cylinder that puts out 159 horses and a 4.0-liter V6 that pumps out a conservative 236 horsepower. Other options will put out 278 horses, but nothing that screams speed demon. The drivers beg to differ, however, believing these trucks possess the soul of a faster vehicle.

19 Most Ticketed: Acura CL 3.0

via www.youtube.com

The Acura CL was produced from 1996 until 2003, but the 3.0-liter engine option was only offered from 1996 until 1999. This is on the list of the top 15 most ticketed and it's almost 20 years old. These 3.0-liter, V6 engines only produced 200 horsepower. What's noteworthy is that the first Fast and the Furious movie came out in 2001; this inspired Acura sales and its new owners to pump their cars full with aftermarket parts to make them faster. This may be one of those cars that got pulled over for various reasons, such as for aftermarket parts and speeding.

18 Most Ticketed: Dodge Stratus SXT

via www.momentcar.com

Made from 1995 until 2006, the Dodge Stratus came in both coupe and sedan models. The coupes discontinued in 2005 and the sedans in 2006. The SXT was a sedan model that, at its best, had a V6 engine that produced 200 horsepower. It's on the list and, like the Acura, is over 10 years old. Maybe this list reveals more about certain drivers and the vehicles they're drawn to. Maybe these older vehicles are more ticketed because they're more likely to have issues, such as burned out tail lights or loud mufflers.

17 Most Ticketed: Volkswagen Golf GTI

via www.keywordbasket.com

Volkswagen Golf's history dates back to 1974. These cars have been sold all over the world under different names, such as the MK nameplates in Europe, Canada and the Rabbit in the United States. No matter the name, it's always been a Golf. The newest models of the Golf GTI are four-cylinder, turbocharged compact cars that can produce as much as 220 horsepower. They're a popular vehicle, even for aftermarket customization, which may explain why they're on the list.

16 Most Ticketed: Mazda 3

via www.mtdemocrat.com

This is an interesting entrant on the list, considering the 3i is listed as well. What is it about this particular Mazda model that makes it on the list twice? It isn't a sports car or even a luxury sedan. There're a lot of reasons why a car gets pulled over, from speeding, unsafe driving, lack of insurance, a light out, or driving without a license. What is it about the drivers in these cars getting pulled over then? The Mazda 3 is a newer model that shouldn't have many mechanical issues. The only likely culprit is speeding. I guess these drivers love to drive their cars so much they drive them faster than they should.

15 Most Ticketed: Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS/LT

via www.zombdrive.com

It doesn't really surprise me this car made it on the list. The Chevrolet Monte Carlo was first produced from 1970 until 1988. It is considered to be one of the cars of the great American muscle car era. It was then put back into production in 1995 until 2007. There were three different trim levels made from 1995 until 2007: the SS, LS, and LT models. The LS and LT models had a V6 motor with just over 200 horsepower. Those who drove this car likely did so because they wanted a piece of American muscle history. Unfortunately for them, these were not those types of Monte Carlos.

14 Most Ticketed: Volkswagen Jetta GL

via www.cargurus.com

This is the second Volkswagen to make the list. It's likely some of the Jetta GLs that were ticketed were driven by young people who wanted to feel like they were in The Fast and the Furious. Volkswagen started producing the Jetta in 1980 and it's been in production since then. With such a long history, it's safe to assume there are lots of them out on the road. This could be a reason for long-lived car models, like the Jetta, record a higher number of tickets. When more of a particular model is out on the road, there's more of them out there getting ticketed.

13 Most Ticketed: Dodge Charger SE/SXT

via www.automobilemag.com

The Dodge Charger is considered to be one of the classic American muscle cars. The history of these cars dates back to 1966. Introduced in the 1966 production year, they ran until 1978; Dodge reintroduced them in 1982. This production period ended in 1987, and then Dodge reintroduced them again in 2006. The latest generation runs a 3.6-liter, V6 motor that pushes out 292 horsepower. I can definitely see one of these getting pulled over for going too fast and I'm sure the driver would do it all over again.

12 Most Ticketed: Nissan 350Z

via www.wikipedia.org

This is the only 2-seater sports car to make the top 15 list. The Nissan 350z is a car with quite a long history—longer than most people realize. The Nissan Z dates back to 1970 with the Datsun 240Z, before Nissan was even a company. The 350Z was in production from 2003 until 2009; the current Z car is the 370Z. The 2009 Nissan 350Z came with a well-built 3.5-liter V6 that put out a powerful 306 horsepower. This sports car is one that anyone would be proud to be pulled over in.

11 Most Ticketed: Lexus ES 300

via www.youtube.com

The strange part about this most ticketed vehicle, based on the Insurance.com research, is that it's a hybrid with an inline four-cylinder engine. It's not a sports car and it's not the type of car that you'd expect to be atop this list. It gets an awesome 40 miles per gallon and has a very modest 200 horsepower under the hood. It really makes you wonder what type of drivers are getting behind the wheel of these particular cars and why they're getting pulled over so often.

10 Least Ticketed: Land Rover Range Rover

via www.motor1.com

The Ranger Rover is considered a luxury sport utility vehicle, four-wheel-drive and all. The Range Rover runs a 3.0-liter, supercharged V6 that makes 340 horsepower. Every celebrity in Hollywood rides in one of these, whether it's a night on the town or taking the family out to dinner. These are the type of trucks that look great and are able to roam through any type of terrain with their powerful four-wheel-drive. It's not surprising to see these trucks on the list of the 10 least ticketed.

9 Least Ticketed: BMW 320i

via www.gumtree.com

Not all BMWs are known for their power, which is the case with the 320i. The 320i is an all-wheel-drive car that's equipped with an inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine. These cars only produce 200 horsepower. These BMWs are more likely to be considered a family car than they are a power car. The one thing BMWs do have in their favor is that they're great machines with world-famous German engineering to back them up.

8 Least Ticketed: Audi A3

via www.leasebusters.com

Audis are known for their handling and come from another German company reflects its engineering. Unlike many Audis, this is one that's made to handle roads well and is a great family car. They come stock with a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder. These motors only put out 170 horsepower. Many Audis come a ton of power, but not everyone buys an Audi because of it. That's probably why they're at the top of the 10 least pulled over list.

7 Least Ticketed: GMC Savana

via www.governmentauctions.org

This is really no surprise. I mean, let's be real, it's a cargo van. It's the kind of van you'd find in a company's fleet for their employees. They come with a big 4.3-liter V6, but they only put out 276 horsepower. I would be far more surprised to see these vans on the most pulled over list. This isn't a surprise. Also, when there are a lot of them used as fleet vehicles for company use, drivers aren't trying to break the law, they're just trying to earn a paycheck.

6 Least Ticketed: Cadillac Escalade

via www.motor1.com

This is another luxury sport utility vehicle that's made the list. Cadillac is an American company known for their power and luxury. Cadillac is a company that produces one of the fastest production vehicles on the market: the CTS-V. The Escalade has plenty of power in the gas pedal, but that's probably not why someone chooses to drive one of these. They're a beautiful luxury truck even though they're pushing out about 376 horsepower out of a mighty 6.2-liter V8 motor. Like the Range Rover, it's a luxury SUV that many A-list celebs are cruising down Sunset Boulevard in.
