Most people in the market for a hatchback probably aren't too concerned about quarter-mile times and hard launches off the line, being more likely to prioritize daily utility in an efficient, affordable package. Americans, specifically, have a love-hate relationship with hot hatches, which leads many foreign manufacturers (and even domestic automakers!) to withhold some amazing vehicles from this market. Two that certainly fit into that category are these siblings from Mercedes-AMG, the A45 S and the lower-spec A35. But both are available in the UK, so CarWow's Mat Watson simply had to pit the two relatives against each other in a drag race to see just how much performance comes along with the A45 S's higher price tag.

Not Quite Identical Twins

From more than 20 feet away, a less discerning hatchback shopper might not be able to spot many differences between the A45 S and the A35. A couple of extra exhaust tips, revised air inlets up front, and slightly different wheels should serve as cues that one of these hatchbacks offers a fair amount more power than the other from its turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Step Up To The Line

The A45 S pumps out 421 horsepower and 368 lb-ft of torque, which is routed to all four wheels through an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Throw in a limited-slip rear differential and launch control to help explain the small hatchback's curb weight in excess of 3,600 pounds. The A35, meanwhile, doesn't receive a hand-built AMG engine, but its 2.0-liter four-banger still pumps out a respectable 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, also sent to all four wheels but through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox and no rear limited-slip diff.

The A35 benefits from a much lower price tag, offering savings of about $15,000 or so, while also shaving around 180 pounds (tipping the scales at five percent less is nothing to scoff at in a drag race). But can it overcome a significant power disadvantage? Pretty clearly, no. Is the step up in performance for the A45 S worth the step up in price? Well, that comes down to personal preference.
