Porsche purists tend to sneer at anything other than an air-cooled 911, though the truth is that just about everything Stuttgart does gets criticized immediately by the brand's devoted fanbase. Once upon a time, Porsche even considered dropping the 911 altogether, in favor of the front-engined, water-cooled 928. Much like the 911 led to the four-cylinder 912, the 928 led to four-cylinder models like the 924 and 944. These cars can now be found for pennies on the dollar used and offer impeccable balance thanks to a rear-mounted transaxle and low curb weights. But nobody could argue that they're nearly powerful enough in the modern era, which makes the platform a perfect foundation for racing builds like this Audi-swapped BOSS GTP Tribute from Motor Werks Racing.

The Power This Porsche Deserves

The car began its life as a Porsche 944, which means it would have maxed out with an inline-four engine that could have benefited from a turbocharger. Now, however, it's received an Audi 1.8-liter 20-valve four-banger and a BorgWarner 7163 turbocharger that routes boost through a three-inch air-to-air intercooler to produce a claimed output of 400 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. Perhaps best of all, the engine can rev up to a screaming 8,500 RPM thanks to ARP studs, a billet adjustable cam gear, and Inconel valves with dual valve springs and titanium retainers.

The photo above reveals a quick glance at the rear-mounted 986 Boxster transaxle, which has received a rear-mounted alternator. Those composite fender flares are removable and the GTP rear spoiler features extenders. A Motion Control suspension system employs remote-reservoir shocks, plus custom Delrin bushings, two-piece adjustable control arms, and box-welded shock towers with adjustable billet camber plates.

The interior is pure function, though its form also looks pretty good with a six-point cage installed and a clean suite of gauges fronting a removable steering wheel. All in, the car only tips the scales at 1,981 pounds thanks to polycarbonate rear windows, non-assisted brakes, and a clamshell front hood. The livery is part of Motor Werks Racing's "Heritage Tribute Collection" and the shop says the car can be seen in action at Atlanta Motorsports Park and at Road Atlanta.
