Regarded as Jaguar's most iconic vehicle, the E-Type is resurrected in an electrified avatar reincarnated by the Oxford-based EV conversion expert Electrogenic. The car was an absolute masterpiece, and even Enzo Ferrari applauded the E-Type as the most beautiful car.

Electrogenic is an Oxford, United Kingdom-based company specializing in converting classic ICE-powered cars into fully electric vehicles. This innovative initiative is based on the motto of bringing back the fantastic cars from the classical period to life and making them ready for a clean and green future. To date, some outstanding projects of the company have been the electrification of the Volkswagen Marmite Bus, the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, the Hudson Commodore, and the Beetle.

Apart from making electric powertrains and components, the specialty of the Electrogenic is that it retains the original shape and feel of the car. Following this, the 1967 Jaguar E-Type, even after going through an all-electric transformation, proudly flaunts its astonishing design.

The E-Type Project

Electrogenic’s primary focus is to create Retro-EVs. It mainly works vehicles which ruled the roads once upon a time but later went out of production. Based on the contract, Electrogenic converts such cars with an all-electric drivetrain and incorporates every modern facility as requested by the client. Thus, the company replaces all the parts and components of outdated or inconvenient cars with their modern counterparts while retaining the vehicle’s original look and riding experience.

For its latest E-Type project, the company offers three advanced electric powertrains, which are more powerful and efficient than the original version. With the new version, the company offers a unique driving experience and performance of modern times in the classic E-type. As the E-Type celebrates its 60th anniversary this year, Electrogenic offers a green version of the car to classic lovers. The electrified variant will be offered in three different power packages: Tourer, Sprint, and Grand Tourer. While the trims vary in terms of power and sophistication, each one of them will be launched with the original exterior design and interior arrangements.

The Three Trims And Interior Modifications

The three magnificent packages of the E-Type comprise of power configuration that grows in size and output with higher packages. Brakes, suspension, and transmission can also be upgraded in the packages. The car’s interior shall remain intact with the necessary repurposing of components. The new electric motors and battery packs shall be fitted on the original engine mounts without altering the car’s bodywork. Hence the conversion can be reversed entirely.

The Tourer being the entry-level package, will be less expensive. It will be powered by an electric motor that can sprint the E-Type to a 100 mph top speed, and the 40kWh battery pack will have a 150-mile range on a single charge. This package shall offer a curb weight lower than the original 1967 E-Type 1¼ Coupe. The lesser curb weight allows the driver to better handle the car with excellent maneuverability.

The following package is the Sprint that has a more powerful electric motor to produce a massive 347 lb-ft of torque mated with the E-Type’s original 4-speed manual transmission system. The estimated 347 lb-ft of torque output will be nearly 100 lb-ft more than the original 6-cylinder engine. As a result, it is expected that the E-Type Sprint will produce more horsepower than the original 265 HP. The car’s curb weight will be equal to the original, but it will have a lighter chassis for nimbler handling. The car will be packed with original brakes and suspension, but buyers can choose optional upgraded brakes and suspension for a better riding experience.

The highest package, the Grand Tourer, is naturally the most powerful. Therefore, the Grand Tourer E-Type shall be powered by the series' most powerful motor and highest capacity battery pack, which will produce 402 HP and 442 lb-ft of torque. To match the electric powertrains capability, this package will offer a convenient single-speed transmission instead of the original manual 4-speed. In addition, buyers can choose an optional fast charging pack too.

For all packages, Electrogenic will offer battery extenders to increase the range. Tourer and Sprint package shall come with a 13kWh and 26kWh battery extender to increase the single charge battery range by 50 or 100 miles. The Grand Tourer will be equipped with only the 26kWh battery extender option that will extend its coverage to 250 miles.

Electrogenic has shunned every possibility of interior or exterior modification to keep the car’s original look and feel intact. Likewise, on the exterior, there will be no change either. The instrument panel and other components on the inside will continue to carry the legacy of the E-Type. In contrast, a few gauges and switches may be repurposed while keeping their shape intact. For example, the fuel gauge may be repurposed to display battery range or state of charge.

The Old Vs The New E-Type

While comparing the old and the new E-Type, they have no visual difference in the exterior or interior. The significant change is under the hood, where the original six-cylinder 4235cc DOHC engine is replaced by an (or more than one) electric motor and a 40kWh battery pack. Though, in higher packages, the power of the battery pack shall increase. While the original 4-speed manual transmission shall be equipped in the Tourer and Sprint packages, for the Grand Tourer package, a more powerful electric motor is mated with a single-speed transmission for better performance.

As far as the power is concerned, the original 6-cylinder 4235cc DOHC produced 265 HP and 283 lb-ft of torque which remained standard from 1964 to 1970 for the E-Type. The electric powertrain of the new E-Type will have three different power sources, and the Sprint and Grand Tourer will produce significantly more power than the old ICE counterpart. The Grand Tourer will have the most powerful motor producing a gigantic 402 HP.

Another one on the list of electrified classics, the E-Type, is set to rule the streets again in old-school fashion while being greener than its predecessors. The car's price tag is expected to be rather hefty and shall range from £54,000 to £80,000, which could vary with the trim and the choice of modifications. The electrified E-Type is set to make its public debut at the 2021 London Classic Car Show.
