The Backstory

via Mecum Auctions

The Plymouth Superbird was in essence a highly modified version of the Plymouth Road Runner, and production started back in 1970. It also became the company's follow-up to its NASCAR racer, the Dodge Charger Daytona, and they were largely equipped with 426cu Hemi engines that produced an amazing 425bhp and could accelerate from 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds, which is impressive even by today's standards. The Superbird has gone on to become an iconic machine, and one so dearly sought after at auctions.

Now, let's look at some of the details of the car that Mecum has on offer. This car will go up for auction over November 12-14, and what a car you are going to get as well. This is a fully restored example of the car, and one of just 1,935 of its type to ever be produced. What makes it special is that it has two original broadcast sheets, and it has a racing pedigree. The car is No. 0171 on the NASCAR Superbird list and comes from a prominent collection of Superbirds.

Power And Beauty

The car, like other Superbirds, features a 440/375bhp engine and– impressively for a car of this era– features power steering as well. The finish of this Superbird is frankly stunning, with the Tor Red really popping out, as does the Plymouth lettering in white along the back of the car. The Plymouth Superbird is surely one of the most stunning muscle cars of the 1970s, and an absolute must collectors car. Given how much a Plymouth Superbird can go for, we expect this to go for a lot.
