One emerging trend in the automotive world has been the ability of niche subcultures to find homes online. With just a few keystrokes, anyone who loves any kind of car—from muscle cars to hot hatches, JDM imports to third-world trucks—can discover all the information, parts, and wisdom they'd ever need to get to work bringing their dream car to life. But even the strangest, wildest dreams of most gearheads will never hold a candle to a radical build by Colin Owen of Claymore Racing, who put together a 1996 Volvo 850 station wagon with a dual-engine setup that will make any soccer mom forget how safe her Swedish breadvan is.

What On Earth

In a series of Facebook posts and a build thread on the Retro-Rides forum, Owen's Volvo emerges in its full, strange form. In classic Volvo style, under the front one-piece hood lurks a 2.4-liter inline-five with a turbocharger bolted on. Less classic, however, is the fact that the front inline-five features a supercharger, as well, and is matched by another twin-charged 2.4-liter inline-five mounted in the trunk. Both the power units employ "twin" setups including ported 20-valve heads, 750cc fuel injectors, a Garrett GT3076 turbocharger, and an Eaton M45 supercharger.

The hows and whys of this build have no place in the world of ridiculously fun projects. Though it's also safe to guess that putting the car together took a fair amount of blood, sweat, and tears. At the rear, an entire subframe from the front end of a donor Volvo was installed to support the engine, as were the strut towers from the same car. But it all comes together and, no doubt, seems worth it when a mommy-mobile spits flames thanks to nitrous boosting at the track.
