The Chevelle became a favorite because of its beautiful designs. But that was not the only thing. The Chevy Chevelle SS drew a crowd because of its powertrain. When this ride debuted in 1963, it came with a 283 cubic inch V8 engine. This powertrain had a maximum output capacity of a whopping 220 hp.

As the years went by, Chevy worked on improving the power unit of the Chevelle and in 1970 they had something to show for it. This was the 454 LS6 engine. This engine was fitted into the Chevelle SS and the car went on to have the 454 LS6 tag added to its name.

This engine was paired with a Muncie M20 4-speed manual transmission. This combination delivered 450 hp at 4,500 rpm and pushed 500 lb-ft of torque at 3,600 rpm. All this power was delivered to the car’s rear-wheel-drive drivetrain. The performance of this engine saw the Chevelle SS make the leader of the Bowtie Brigade.

Today, everyone appreciates pushing seats made of leather or any other material. Bucket seats, clean-cut lines and proper finishings and upholstery are used to rank the quality of a car’s interior. For the most part, the 1979 Chevelle SS might miss a mark or two as per these qualifications.

However, it still has a stunning interior and indeed it was quite unique. This ride features a well done sleek design that was just right for its time. The interior mostly came as black; bucket seats were offered as an option for those looking to take their cars to the tracks.

The dash features an emblazoned steering wheel that blends seamlessly with the simple yet sophisticated dash.

The exterior on the other hand also proved to be a first for Chevy. The 1970 Chevelle SS features a more sporty and edgy design compared to its predecessors. It features a front grille, modified headlights, dual bumpers, and a rear emblem with the SS signature.
