In General Motors electrification plan, the electric vehicles based on its new-generation Ultium platform are set to be game changers in their own right. With 30 new global EVs planned for introduction by 2025 across brands like Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC, it certainly looks like GM's gunning for dominance.

And with the upcoming Chevrolet Blazer EV, it looks like GM has the Tesla Model Y squarely in its sights. The Model Y has been fending off the competition from the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, and others. Now with the 247-mile Blazer EV, the Model Y must defend its honor once again. As far as public response to the new EV from Chevrolet goes, it seems the people love the electric Blazer. The first round of Blazer EVs has been sold out ahead of it going on sale in the summer of 2023. And even reservations for the 2024 Blazer EV (and the 1LT model) have also been put on hold as the demand was so great.

While the Tesla Model Y is quite impressive, let's take a look at how its compares against the new kid on the block – the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV.

UPDATED NOVEMBER 2022: We've updated this article with new information regarding the availability of reservations for the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV, and why it takes the fight to Tesla convincingly.

The Tesla Model Y is the one of the most popular electric crossovers in America. Unlike most EVs in its segment, the Model Y offers a 5 seat configuration along with the option of a 5+2. Tesla equips the Model Y as standard with a 75 kWh battery pack with rear-wheel-drive single motor and all-wheel-drive dual motor setups.

The Model Y Performance trim is a very quick car which claims to accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds thanks to the instantaneous power surge from the electric motors. The same trim is also EPA certified to be capable of 303 miles. However, the Long Range version of the Model Y offers an impressive 326 miles.

The Model Y also offers a crisp white or black interior brightens up the cabin, surrounding a giant infotainment system that controls almost all the vehicle's cool functions. Without a button or knob in sight, the Tesla Model Y gives a whole new meaning to the word "futuristic". The seats add a touch of elegance and immense comfort. And the material used on the dashboard keeps the overall feel upmarket enough to wow any passenger. That said, the Model Y still has some flaws you should be aware of.

The reappearance of the iconic Chevrolet Blazer in 2019 got Chevrolet fans excited. But now Chevrolet has taken it to another level and introduced the Blazer as an EV. Four ranges will be made available. The 1LT, the 2LT, the RS, and the highest range, the SS. But to unlock the Blazer EV's full potential and maximum driving range, the RS is your best option.

Although not many statistics have been released surrounding the 1LT, 2LT, and RS, it’s been released that the highest spec level of the SS will produce an incredible 557 hp through an electric all-wheel drive system. Chevrolet has claimed that the same model will achieve a 0-60 mph time of under 4 seconds!

Chevrolet hasn’t revealed much information on the battery packs set to be used on the Blazer. However, the RS model will give you the most miles per charge, coming in at 320 miles. The other models will have a slightly less impressive mile range, with the lowest range coming in the form of the 1LT, which is expected to reach 247 miles per charge. The all-new Blazer can charge up to 190 kw, with 78 miles of charge being added every 10 minutes!

The interior of the Chevrolet Blazer EV suits the aggressive and sporty exterior. While plenty of legroom is made available in the Blazer, headroom is lacking. Within the RS and SS trims, there will be a two-tone black and red color scheme, adding to the sporty feel. The dashboard features redefined round air vents that not only provide effective airflow but also a luxurious finish.

Moving onto the infotainment system of the Blazer, it’s certainly had an upgrade. The technology is on par, if not better, than the Tesla Model Y's interior technology. All trim levels come with a 17.7-inch infotainment screen as standard, with physical buttons controlling the climate control and volume.

Not only does the Blazer have one screen, but an additional 11-inch screen displaying the driver with gauges and information is also present. Not much else has been revealed regarding the Blazers' infotainment system, although it is expected to have Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot.

Of course, it’s clear to see that both the Tesla Model Y and the Chevrolet Blazer EV are both incredible EVs. The Model Y is extremely popular in the US as a compact electric crossover, and is the best-selling used car in America. The Model Y is priced under $70,000 before benefits can be included. Flipping onto the Chevrolet Blazer EV, and despite its deficit in range, it has everything you may want in an EV.

The Blazer EV claims to be comparably as quick as the Model Y in terms of acceleration. The cabins are both equally well-equipped, but the Tesla's button-free interior might be too minimalist for some. The driving range is more than adequate in the Blazer EV, while the technology is plentiful. With the Chevrolet Blazer EV starting at $44,995, and prices for the 2024 model set to be around $1,000 more, it seems like a no-brainer. For the Tesla Model Y, you’d be paying an additional $10,000 on average for very few extras!
