While the Rivian R1T is gaining popularity and getting a lot of praise from car reviewers, the Chevrolet Silverado could be a good competitor for the startup. The Chevrolet Silverado will be launched as a 2024 variant in 2023 with a design that doesn’t look much different from generic small pickup trucks, unlike the R1T which has got a revolutionary new design that will make heads turn on the road. The Chevrolet Silverado will have an option of a midgate design that allows users to fold down the wall between the cabin and the bed for additional storage space.

The Rivian R1T has the most intuitive storage spaces we have ever seen in a pickup truck. With a short bed that can be extended through a gooseneck tailgate system that allows the tailgate to open 180° which makes the bed length increase up to 55.1 inches. The Chevrolet Silverado EV is a larger pickup truck, but official specs are not out yet, so we cannot conclude which truck will have better storage spaces and hence more practicality.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV is a crew-cab truck with a mid-size bed, unlike the Rivian R1T, which is a tad smaller than a full-size truck like the F150 Lightning but bigger than a mid-sized truck. However, comparing sizes, the Chevrolet Silverado is a bit bigger than the Rivian R1T in terms of length but both the trucks are pretty similar in height and width. So, if size matters to you, there is not much of a distinction between the two.

Now, the Rivian R1T has been well-acclaimed for its quad-motor setup with distinct electric motors for all wheels, the Chevrolet Silverado has dual-electric motors although both the trucks have all-wheel-drive. The Rivian R1T is the first truck from the new electric startup and features a whole new design and architecture for the whole truck. The Chevrolet Silverado, on the other hand, uses a specially-designed Ultium battery vehicle platform, which it shares with GMC’s Hummer EV.

The major selling point around the R1T is its incredible performance both in urban and off-road conditions. Now, GM does claim impressive figures around the Silverado EV, but against R1T’s quad-motor setup, it isn’t difficult to imagine the winner here. The Rivian R1T produces 835HP and a max torque of 908 lb-ft, with an impressive 0-60 time of 3 seconds. GM claims the Silverado EV will have a maximum output of 664HP and 780 lb-ft of peak torque. The Silverado EV will have a 0-60 time of just over 4.5 seconds with the help of its Wide Open Watts(WOW) Launch Control System.

GM claims the Silverado EV will have a range of over 400 miles, which is much more than the Rivian R1T’s claimed range of 314 miles with the “large” battery pack. However, a larger battery pack version is set to be announced in 2023 with an increased range of 400 miles. GM also claims that the Silverado EV will support DC fast-charging, which will get users 100 miles of range with 10 minutes of charging. The Rivian R1T claims a charging speed of 140 miles of range in 20 minutes with its fast charger, which peaks at 210kW. The Silverado EV is expected to support up to 350kW of fast charging.

The Rivian R1T has some of the most interesting power outlet spaces seen in pickup trucks, with six different charging outlets spread across the vehicle. The R1T even has a power outlet in the gear tunnel. The R1T has four 110V outlets and two 12V outlets. The Silverado EV offers 10 charging outlets, and you can charge other electric cars with the Silverado EV.

The Chevrolet Silverado EV has a maximum payload capacity of 1,300 lbs which is quite less than the Rivian R1T’s maximum payload capacity of 1760lbs. The Rivian R1T also takes the lead in towing capacity at 11,000lbs compared to the 10,000lbs towing capacity of the Silverado EV. Since both of these trucks are electric, they make use of the front trunk(or frunk) for easily-accessible and closed storage. Rivian R1T’s frunk has a capacity of 11 cubic feet, which is enough to keep some bags for better safety than the bed. GM has not yet revealed the specifics about its “e-trunk” but keeping up with Silverado’s theme of modular storage, we can expect the frunk capacity to be similar to the Rivian R1T.

Both these trucks are highly-expected and will be a stepping stone for the relatively-new EV pickup trucks segment. Both the pickup trucks are comparable with the Rivian R1T having a more futuristic theme and GM going with a conventional design with some modern cues. The Rivian R1T is not made for the common man with a starting price of $67,500 for the base trim and the Launch and Adventure editions starting at $73,000. GM has announced that the price of the Silverado EV will be undercut to around $40,000.

Both the pickup trucks have great design and a great spec sheet, however since there are no real-life specs about the Silverado EV, unlike the R1T which has received critical appraisal due to its amazing real-life user experience. We can say that GM will make sure the Silverado EV will be a tough competitor to the R1T, and it's a win-win situation for the consumers.
