Chevrolet has rolled out the all-new turbocharged inline-4 engine for their Silverado full-size pickups.

We’re not sure if you’re aware, but in today’s day and age, people are concerned with things like fuel efficiency and pollution. They still want to drive trucks, mind you, regardless of the fact they’re only transporting themselves and a bag of grapes, but they want to feel less awful about the fact they’re killing the planet while they’re doing it.

Never say that GM isn’t a carmaker that listens. They’ve come out with an all-new, all-great 4-cylinder engine that is set to become the new standard for the entry-level Silverado trims.

The new engine is 2.7-L, coming in at 300 cc’s smaller than the 3.0-L turbodiesel that Chevy got really excited about a few months ago. It’s got a big old turbocharger on it that helps this little inline four-banger produce 310 ponies and 348 lb-ft of torque—that’s 25 more horses and 43 more lb-ft than the previous 4.3-L V6.

We haven’t got exact fuel efficiency numbers from Chevy, but they promise it will have better fuel efficiency than the V6 too. Best of all, all that power and torque comes at a wider band of engine revs, from 1,500 to 4,000 RPM.

To help the new engine get further on as little gas as possible, Chevy employed a number of neat tricks. There's some fancy business with the camshaft, an exhaust that feeds the turbocharger at opposite ends, and it can turn off up to two cylinders when they’re not needed.

Of course, if you still want the old V6 you can still find it on the Work Truck trim along with the old six-speed manual. You can also get the old 5.3-L and 6.2-L V8 on higher trim levels. There’s even that 3.0-L turbodiesel for those who really want to get esoteric.

Just know that if you drive any of those model cars that you’re not doing your part for the environment.
