The Chevy Corvette Z06 could arrive as a 2022-model-year offering at the end of 2021 with 800 horsepower and over 700 pound-feet of torque.
That is according to Automobile, who has some juicy rumors relating to the C8. They report that the whopping power will come as a result of an evolution of the Cadillac's 4.2-liter twin-turbo Blackwing V8. The engine won't be called Blackwing, however, with Cadillac already stating as much, and will probably be dubbed a generic GM name LT7. That would see to a major improvement in the Corvette lineup, over 300 horsepower to be somewhat precise, as well as a 230 pound-feet torque raise from what's in the naturally-aspirated 6.2-liter V8 in the base Stingray.
There are years of insider information to provide struts for the above. Motor Trend reported that the next Corvette would boast a brand new 5.5-liter V8 way back in 2010, but they were referring to the C7 lineup. Corvette Forum stumbled upon a leaked document from industry analysts IIHS Markit towards the end of 2017 that detailed the options for the Corvette and a Cadillac.
Automobile's report doesn't touch on displacement for the Z06 but it is expected to be the 5.5-liter engine with a max output of 850hp and 720 pound-feet noted in the IIHS Markit disclosure.
CAD drawings of an engine labeled the Gen6 LT7 were obtained by Corvette Forum shortly after they published the details of the leaked document.
Last month, GM Authority found more information on the LT7 and outlined the similarities and differences between it and the Cadillac 4.2-liter Blackwing TTV8.
As detailed below, GM Authority published a chart of step changes in horsepower from the C7 generation. Autoblog has added C6 performance variants.
- Corvette C6 Z06: 7.0L NA V8 - 505 hp, 470 lb-ft
- Corvette C6 ZR1: 6.2L Supercharged LS9 V8 - 638 hp, 604 lb-ft
- Corvette C7 Stingray: 6.2L LT1 NA V8 - 460 hp, 465 lb-ft
- Corvette C7 Z06: 6.2L Supercharged LT4 V8 - 650 hp, 650 lb-ft
- Corvettte C7 ZR1: 6.2L Supercharged LT5 V8 - 755 hp, 715 lb-ft
- Corvette C8 Stingray: 6.2L LT2 NA V8 - 495 hp, 470 lb-ft
- Corvette C8 Z06 (rumored): 5.5L TT LT7 V8 - 800 hp, 700 lb-ft
It's quite reasonable to believe that the C8 is set for 800hp after seeing the power increases from the ZR1 models to the Z06 models.
Automobile has also suggested that Chevrolet could swap the Stingray's eight-speed dual-clutch trans for a 10-speed dual-clutch and that the Z06 could get a manual gearbox option.
