It’s a battle of the Chevrolets as a previous-gen Corvette Z06 takes on a Camaro ZL1 in drag race action.

This is going to be an interesting shootout. Both cars are Chevys and even have the same LT4 engines. Both cars have the same magnetic ride control dampers and the same Brembo brakes. Both have the same electronic limited-slip differential, the same performance traction control, and even the same infotainment system.

However, there are quite a few differences. First, there’s the chassis, with the Camaro riding on the venerable GM Alpha platform while the Corvette has its specific Y-body platform. Then there’s the body shape, with the Camaro trying to evoke the classic muscle car stance while the Corvette allows itself some degree of aerodynamics.

There’s also the transmission, with the Camaro sporting a 10-speed automatic while the Corvette has to make do with an older 8-speed model (the 10-speed automatic wouldn’t be available for the Corvette until the arrival of the ZR1).

Power for both cars is the same thanks to the LT4 6.2-L supercharged V8 engine pumping out 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. However, all those previous differences mean that each car has very different performance profiles. The Corvette Z06 can achieve a zero to sixty time of around 3 seconds, while the Camaro takes up to 3.5 seconds. The Corvette’s greater downforce limits top speed to 185 mph, while the Camaro can reach 190 mph.

Perhaps most crucially, the Corvette is 300 lbs lighter than the Camaro, providing it with the superior power-to-weight ratio.

It seems that power-to-weight figure might have been the deciding factor. The Camaro gets the jump on the Corvette for the early lead, but the Corvette manages to close the distance and sneak ahead just before the finish line.

The Corvette finished in 11.20 seconds at 125.41 mph, while the Camaro finished in 11.45 seconds at 122.14 mph. An extremely close race with great times from both drivers.
