Someone’s chihuahua managed to put their owner’s SUV into reverse and almost escaped while she was getting gas.
This one is a real head-scratcher. There are many unanswered questions here, such as why the chihuahua was so dissatisfied with its home life that it felt the need to escape in their owner’s Hyundai Santa Fe SUV. Or how a 5-pound chihuahua managed to apply enough pressure to cause the Santa Fe’s shifter to pop out of park and into reverse without the car being on.
But the biggest question we have is how on Earth did nobody wind up in the hospital?

A couple was pumping gas at a gas station on Gause Blvd. A 5 pound chihuahua somehow put the vehicle in reverse. The SUV, rolled backwards, crossed over a 4 lane road and came to rest at the gas station across the street. Only minor injuries. pic.twitter.com/msfrC5mApB
The news comes courtesy of the Slidell Police Department’s social media division which shared this impressive tale of a tiny chihuahua performing what appears to be the impossible. “A couple was pumping gas at a gas station on Gause Blvd,” wrote the department. “A 5-pound chihuahua somehow put the vehicle in reverse. The SUV rolled backward, crossed over a 4 lane road and came to rest at the gas station across the street. Only minor injuries.
Greater detail was shared on their Facebook page, which also had camera footage of the event thanks to the gas station’s security system. You can see the woman appears to have just finished pumping gas and is walking to get back into the driver’s seat when her SUV starts rolling away. She tries to open the door, but the car is rolling too fast and she’s instead thrown to the road.
Chihuahua puts SUV in reverse
This past Friday evening, a couple was pumping gas at a gas station on Gause Boulevard. A 5 pound chihuahua, who was inside of the SUV, put the vehicle in reverse. The SUV, rolled backwards, crossed over Gause Boulevard (a 4 lane highway) and came to rest at the gas station across the street. The owner did sustain a minor injury while trying to chase down the vehicle. It was discovered the vehicle had a mechanical issue, which allowed the transmission to change gears without sometime having to press the brake. It is a miracle that no one was seriously injured and that no other vehicles were struck during this incident. Then her Hyundai rolls into traffic across a four-lane road. Cars whiz past, but miraculously, none of them hit her vehicle. The chihuahua-powered SUV then tolls to the gas station on the opposite side of the road where it eventually comes to a stop.
Later, it was determined that a mechanical issue allowed the woman’s car to be put into reverse without brake application. This still doesn’t explain how a chihuahua managed to nudge the shifter out of park, but perhaps that was a mechanical issue too.
The Slidell PD closes with: “Let this be a lesson to everyone to please use caution when leaving pets inside of your vehicle!”
