The Cars Go Head To Head

Although the famous GT model of the Pontiac Tempest is the GTO, the GT 37 was a replacement as a cheaper version of the higher trim. Yet, it still features all the GTO goodies, such as a 350 two-barrel V8 engine that could put out 255 horsepower in a base model. Yet, there are better editions available. This includes an automatic transmission model that could whop out 330 horsepower. Then, there is a V8 model with a manual transmission, which could offer an impressive 345 horsepower. The 3,716 lbs model on the drag strip saw an upgrade of 4.33 gears, giving it more advantage than the standard model.

Moreover, the 1972 Dodge Demon 340 is a lightweight muscle car with a weight of 3,390 lbs with the driver. This put it at a slight advantage in comparison to the Pontiac.

Nonetheless, the Demon's overall performance is a little weaker. The Dodge Demon 340 comes with a 340-cubic inch V8 engine and a drag-friendly three-speed automatic transmission, which could offer a maximum of 240 horsepower. Outback, the Dodge Demon 340 features cruise-friendly 3.55 rear gears, which puts it at a disadvantage to the Pontiac GT 37.

With temperatures of 61 Fahrenheit and 26% humidity, the track conditions are pretty sweet for these two cars. Yet, one takes the stride and wins the race with no struggle at all.

Getting off to a slow start, both cars glide down the drag strip at a steady pace. The Pontiac Tempest GT 37 takes the lead the entire way and wins the race. It has a time of 12.62 seconds and a top speed of 110.95 mph, which makes the Dodge Demon 340's time of 14.12 seconds and speed of 95 mph look pretty slow.

Overall, the Pontiac Tempest GT 37 wins the race pretty fairly. Its heavier weight did not affect its time or its speed. It had it in the bag from the moment it set off from the start line and manages to thrash the 1972 Dodge Demon 340.
