The new C8 Chevrolet Corvette arrived just before coronavirus-related slowdowns ground the automotive industry to a halt, with the result being that the internet is now chock-full of videos featuring happy new owners playing with their toys. But amid reports that higher-spec Corvette variants may be facing significant delays, aftermarket companies like Hennessey Performance have become even more incentivized to produce twin-turbocharged and upgraded C8 packages, though one YouTuber discovered the result isn't always great. Hennessey has not officially unveiled a twin-turbo C8 for sale yet, and the Texas-based tuners are still working on Chevy's outgoing C7 Corvettes, as well, with the latter being the focus of a new video demonstrating the mind-melting power of Hennessey's C7 Corvette HPE1200 upgrade.

Climb Aboard

Not too long ago, Hennessey released a clip of an 850-horsepower C7 Corvette ZR1 being delivered to its owner, but this version takes things to a whole new level. Available as a package for installation on the 2019 Corvette ZR1, which left the factory with a 6.2-liter pushrod LT5 V8 and an Eaton supercharger that combined to produce 755 horsepower and 715 lb-ft of torque.

Hennessey clearly doesn't think that's nearly enough for the Corvette, so the maxed-out HPE1200 package was developed by porting the factory-installed supercharger and adding long-tube stainless-steel exhaust headers.

Complementary Work

With a high-flow throttle body and both upper and lower pulley upgrades, the LT5 also required internal modification to support such huge power gains. The laundry list includes a custom camshaft, ported cylinder heads, upgraded valve springs, bearings, lifters, and pushrods. Additional complementary work includes high-flow catalytic converters, stainless midpipes, and an upgrade to the transmission for automatic-equipped Corvettes, thought the seven-speed manual-equipped cars do not require that step.

Running on E85 or race gas, the whole setup creates a peak of 1,200 horsepower and 1,066 lb-ft of torque, which Hennessey proves with a dyno sheet. But the best part is watching and listening as the hardcore build blasts around on the Pennzoil Proving Grounds in the video above.
