The Grand Cherokee is an SUV that has made the American brand proud after winning many awards over the years. To celebrate 30 years of its existence, Jeep has introduced the 30th-anniversary edition of the Grand Cherokee 4xe.

Jeep's Grand Cherokee, right since the beginning in 1992, has met the expectations of many American buyers it was easily one of the best premium SUVs around, and in its latest generation, it continues to be so. Jeep states that it has sold over 7 million Grand Cherokees all over the globe, and the electrified plug-in-hybrid 4xe model takes things up several notches for a market that's evolving rapidly.

With the new anniversary edition, Jeep wants to prove the Cherokee isn't going out of market anywhere soon; in fact, the goal is to be among the leaders of all-electric and hybrid SUVs.

2023 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe Looks 'Grand'

The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe 30th-anniversary special edition doesn't look drastically different from the regular Cherokee 4xe, but some highlights make it stand out subtly. There are blacked-out elements on the front end, dual exhausts, special-edition badging, 20-inch black wheels, and a dual-pane sunroof.

The Cherokee 4xe sports a bold look with sculpted surfaces; it's unmistakably premium to look at and is by far, the best-looking one to hit the market. The roof seems more tapered, and that's an advantage for the SUV's overall aerodynamics - and this does not come at the cost of cargo space and utility.

The large windows and the strong belt-line below give one the impression of a great glasshouse experience on the inside. The seven-slot grille is the widest so far, and hidden behind the front fascia is a long-range radar and a few other advanced features.

The long hood is set high up - high enough to intimidate crossovers. It also gives the Jeep an elevated stance, which is what Americans love, don't we? The Jeep looks like it's built to ferry industrial bigwigs to their headquarters. Then there are the active grille shutters, air curtains, a lower roofline, and vertical-pillar spoilers at the back.

The Cherokee 4xe special edition features black Capri leather seats, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, Uconnect 5 with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, navigation, and more. Some standard features include rain-sensing windshield wipers, intersection collision assist, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system.

There are full of top-notch materials inside. The front panel features slim HVAC vents, a center stack that's been realigned for the driver's access, 10.1-inch digital screens, and a 10.25-inch front passenger interactive display. There's also an entertainment system for the rear passengers with FireTV built-in. The 16-way adjustable front seats have power lumbar and memory, and seat back massage is offered for the front passengers.

Apart from heated/vented seats, you also get three-level configurable controls for the first two rows. The SUV gets a full suite of customizable LED lighting with daytime/nighttime settings, and there's ambient lighting with a five-color selection as well.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe's Hybrid Powertrain Is Why Should Consider It

The hybrid powertrain can be adjusted by the driver to suit the usage, be it the daily office route in pure-electric mode or road trips that involve highways. The Jeep anniversary edition does everything an SUV can do, all in near silence. The 4xe propulsion system is a combination of two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, and a 2.0-liter turbocharged, 4-cylinder engine that produces a combined output of 375hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.

Paired to the engine is a TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic gearbox that ensures the best fuel efficiency possible. The 4xe anniversary edition manages an all-electric range of 25 miles, which isn't bad for a hybrid. The engine is based on the Stellantis Group's Global Medium Engine family. Thanks to the electric power steering and an electrically-driven air conditioning system, there's no load on the engine.

Don't mistake the 4-cylinder engine for being small, because the 4xe is quick and can sprint to 60mph in about 6 seconds - and that makes it quicker than the model with the HEMI V8. It simply surges ahead; just don't expect it to take off like a Ford F-150 Lightning. Turning the drive mode selector to E-Save brings down some excessive noise that's heard along with the engine.

Put it in Electric mode, and the Jeep will run on battery power alone, but only to an extent. Push down harder on the throttle, and the gasoline engine kicks in - a lot like the BMW i8 sports car then. But the transition could've been smoother. The Jeep is said to feel composed, for the most part, thanks to the air suspension, and the steering isn't too bad either.
