Eric went to art school in Buffalo and realized that after he left school, he would end up doing something boring so he left and went to Pittsburgh where he went to school for special effects. He liked sci-fi and horror and thought that this would be a great career path.

“At the time, I was on my own financially, and after one year in school, I ran out of money. I was in my early 20s, wasn’t fully mature, and had been doing a bunch of eclectic jobs, like painting houses. I knew I needed a career, and it had to be something more than just “another job,” because I’ve been a father since I was 19, and was committed to being a good father to my son.”

When he was at art school, he would sometimes repair cars for his friends. He did not want this to be just an odd job whereby he would make some money here and there, he went on to become an auto technician.

Eric the Car Guy is a Rosedale graduate who has gone on to become one of the top automotive YouTube channels! He currently has over 1.8 million subscribers and hundreds of videos on car repair. Eric is the type of mechanic that is not there to show off but to show people how they can fix their cars at home. He wants people to have a better understanding of how their cars work and run and when there are simple things for you to fix, he wants you to know how to do them yourself.

Eric has created a website that has a lot of information on it. There are blog posts to show you how to solve common issues and he has also uploaded hundreds of videos on car repairs on his website as well as on his YouTube channel.

“ I remembered having seen an old “David’s Farm” video, with him holding a check for $7-8,000 from YouTube, from one month's worth of videos. I put two-and-two together and figured there was nobody out there doing automotive how-to videos. I planned to make some DIY-automotive videos, getting more detailed, and going further with it than what he was doing.

I’m lucky to have found a niche on YouTube very early on, in 2009, when How-To videos were still relatively new. By now, the market is very saturated, so it’s a more difficult time to start out today.”

Cool cars that Eric has worked on:

One of the coolest cars Eric has worked on has to be the Turbo Fairmont. It is a 363 engine that makes 575 horsepower and 622 lb-ft of torque at a 7.8psi boost. These figures are from when he first tested the engine out.

Eric went on to fit an On3 single 70mm turbo kit which feeds a Demon 750 blow thru carburettor mounted on an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake. This car sounds like a dream come true when that key is turned in the ignition. It is a 5-speed manual that feeds power to an 8.8 rear end with 3:55 gears.

To help keep this car safe, it has SVE Cobra brakes with dual-piston front calipers. One of the only things that are stock on this car is the wheels and they do not look half bad. The car also has AC, Bluetooth and hands-free. You can watch the building of this car on his YouTube channel.

Eric has also worked on or driven:

  • 98 Type R Supercharged
  • 1957 Chevy
  • 1972 Galaxie with 429 engine
  • Acura NSX-T
