The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid manufactured by General Motors, also marketed in re-badged variants as the Holden Volt in Australia and New Zealand, Buick Velite 5 in China, and with a different fascia as the Vauxhall Ampera in the United Kingdom and as the Opel Ampera in the remainder of Europe. Volt production ended in February 2019.

The Volt was discontinued for a number of reasons however, this is still an awesome plug-in hybrid car! It is fun to drive and it is a great car for those who are environmentally aware.

The 2011 Volt began selling in stores in 2011 in mid-December. Globally combined Volt/Ampera-family sales totalled about 177,000 units by the end of October 2018. The United States was leading the market with this car with over 150 000 cars sold by the end of 2019.

The Volt is a 5-door liftback car that has a front-engine and front-wheel drive. It is a 1-speed Voltec 4ET50 Multi-mode electric transaxle transmission system. Over the years of production, the battery did differ from year to year.

First-generation Volts had:

  • 16.0 kWh lithium-ion (2011–2012)
  • 16.5 kWh lithium-ion (2013–2014)
  • 17.1 kWh lithium-ion (2015)

Second-generation Volts had:

18.4 kWh lithium-ion (2016)

The range of the first-generation Volt was 380 miles and 35 miles EPA whereas, with the second generation, they were able to get a further range with 420 miles and 53 miles EPA.

The Volt has won several awards, including the 2009 Green Car Vision Award, 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2011 North American Car of the Year, 2011 World Green Car, 2012 European Car of the Year, and 2016 Green Car of the Year.

During the last year of production, the 2019 version was able to charge a lot quicker because it came with an option of a 7.2- kWh charger on the base Volt LT model and standard on my Premier trim tester. It drops 240-volt charging times from 4.5 hours to 2.3. Those planning on powering up on a standard household wall outlet still have to strap in for a 13-hour wait. The engine was an Electric drive system with a 1.5L I4 range extender (149 hp; 294 lb-ft).

This car had good driving dynamics, was a lengthy all-electric range and a long list of standard technology that came with the car. The one downside was that the back of the car was a bit snug so you cannot have tall people in your rear seats as it is rather uncomfortable for them.

The biggest news is the updated tech in the center stack with Chevy's Infotainment 3 system housed in an 8-inch touchscreen. Graphics are crisp with intuitive menus and snappy response times. This feature came into play with the new generation Volt.

Chevy's Infotainment 3 system is the coolest feature on the interior of the car because it allows you to connect your phone using Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. With Bluetooth, a wireless connection allows you to play audio from your phone and make hands-free phone calls. In some vehicles, you can connect multiple devices at one time.

You are able to personalize the system and use it to access your music, contacts, apps and more. It was designed to work similarly to popular smartphones and tablets. You can also update the system as well same as you would your smart devices which is nice because you will always have the latest in technology.

Why was it discontinued?

There are a few speculations as to why the Volt was discontinued.

Firstly, it cost too much to build. It was an expensive car to build which meant that it was an expensive car to buy. The price of the car did not appeal to people and they chose to go with more affordable electric cars. Because the Volt was burdened with both an electric powertrain and an internal combustion powertrain that offered fewer opportunities for cost reduction, the Volt could never achieve the same profitability as either a pure internal combustion vehicle or a pure battery electric vehicle.

The car looks sexy but it does not work for everyone. As we mentioned earlier, the one downside to this car was the fact that the rear seats felt like you were squished in so it was not a comfortable ride for passengers in the back seat.
