James Bond maniacs do often postulate what the franchise’s next Bond car should be, but judging by the cars that have been repeatedly featured in the past on the amazing franchise, we could sometimes predict what car would make a return. While it’s widely believed that the 007 character belongs in an Aston Martin, we’ve seen him do incredible stunts, extreme high-speed chases, and other amazing stuff in other car models.
We also observed that Bond cars are sometimes left stock. Other times, they are specially modified to meet the demands of specific movie roles or as fictionally required by Q-Branch, the research, and development arm of the British Secret Service in Bond movies. Nonetheless, from the ones used as stock to the performance-modified versions, as well as those fortified with Q-Branch’s jaw-dropping features, here is a ranked list of the most amazing James Bond Cars of all time.
10 2CV Citroen – For Your Eyes Only (1981
Not the kind of car expected on a list of the coolest Bond cars, but we have a case here. This is the 2CV, a brainchild of then President of Citroën, Pierre Michelin, who aimed it for the lowest rung of the French economy. But needing to escape in the 1981 movie For Your Eyes Only, Bond found the lowly 2CV extra useful.
The car practically saved his life, helping him get home safely through an intense high-speed chase that also wrecked the 2CV. Notably, it’s one of the cheapest cars we’ve seen Bond drive. Amazing!
9 1974 AMC Hornet – The Man with the Golden Gun (1974
In The Man With The Golden Gun, Bond, played by Roger Moore stole a red 1974 Hornet X hatchback from a Bangkok showroom for a speed chase. Notably, it wasn’t an “ordinary” Hornet. For its role, the stunt car was considerably modified; it was fitted with a redesigned chassis, giving it a lower stance while the steering wheel was repositioned to the center.
Most impressive of all was its accomplishments of a 360-degree mid-air twisting corkscrew jump over a broken bridge. A stunt recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the first time it was ever executed in a movie.
8 Toyota 2000GT – You Only Live Twice (1967)
Sean Connery drove a 2000GT in the 1967 Bond movie, You Only Live Twice. Due to Connery’s height and the car’s relatively small size, two one-off topless models were specifically modified for the film. Sentimentally chosen ahead of a Chevrolet Camaro, for the need of a Japanese car, the 2000GT however didn’t disappoint.
The sharp spike in visits to Toyota dealerships after the movie makes it a classic case of product placement. The undoubtedly cool car was also picked by Bond actor Daniel Craig as his all-time favorite Bond car.
7 Ford Mustang Mach 1 – Diamonds Are Forever (1971)
In the 1971 Bond movie, Diamonds Are Forever, Bond commandeered a Ford Mustang Mach 1 for his escape. The car had no input from Q Division and surely didn’t need it, anyway. However, the movie is also widely remembered for an escape scene that had Bond drive Mach 1 into a narrow alleyway balanced on its two right wheels, but emerged on the two left wheels.
But hey, it’s a Mach 1, and while we haven’t forgiven the producer for such an embarrassing continuity error, we bear no grudge with the iconic car.
6 BMW Z8 – The World Is Not Enough (1999)
Notably, the BMW Z8 in the 1999 movie The World Is Not Enough wasn’t exactly a Z8. Although it was supplied by BMW, the car was a mocked-up version of the Z8, powered by the E39 M5’s V8 with an output of 400bhp and 370 lb-ft of torque. It can accelerate from rest to 62 mph in less than five seconds.
Furthermore, the car had great inputs from Q-Branch. These include titanium armor, a key fob that could remotely control the car, an infrared tracking system, and a surface-to-air missile, among others.
5 Aston Martin Vanquish – Die Another Day (2002)
Like several other 007 maniacs, we could digest the disappearance feature on this Bond car, hence, we ranked it 6th. It’s the Aston Martin V12 Vanquish featured in the 2002 movie Die Another Day. However, asides from its ill-conceived vanishing adaptive camouflage feature, the car has a host of other awesome Q Division-installed features like the missiles and machine guns, among others.
Also, the Vanquish used for the filming was fitted with a four-wheel drive and a Ford-sourced 300bhp V8 for increased traction on ice.
4 1985 Aston Martin V8 Vantage – The Living Daylights (1987)
Timothy Dalton, with his tough demeanor and athleticism, brought a refreshing and more staid outlook to the 007 character. And so does his Aston Martin V8 Vantage in the 1987 movie, The Living Daylights. The gadgets on the bulletproof car include missile outriggers, pop-out spiked tires, and wheel lasers.
While these features are fictional, they make the car awesome, nonetheless. The 1985 V8 Vantage is so cool in real life as well. It runs on a 5.3-liter engine and will be making a return in the forthcoming Bond movie, No Time to Die.
3 Lotus Esprit Turbo – The Spy Who Loved Me (1977)
Roger Moore, the third and the most featured Bond, claimed The Spy Who Loved Me is his favorite, among the Bond movies he’s acted in. An easy pick. In the 1977 movie, Bond was tasked with investigating the sudden disappearance of a British and a Soviet ballistic missile submarine.
The movie featured Lotus Esprit called “Wet Nellie” and it had an iconic car chase scene that started on the ground but ended up with the car submerged in water. For its amphibious capabilities, many 007 enthusiasts considered the Lotus as the best Bond car.
2 1997 BMW 750iL – Tomorrow Never Dies (1997)
Only one car could have displaced this entry from the top spot of the coolest Bond cars, and it did. Nonetheless, the BMW 750iL featured in the 1997 Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies is absolutely exceptional. The array of technology and features on the car were jaw-dropping, for the time the movie was released.
Bond could remotely control the car and its gadgets from a phone. The car can fire small rockets, shoot a gun, drop spikes, release toxic gases, and it can also automatically fix and inflate its tires.
1 Aston Martin DB5 – Goldfinger 1964
No other James Bond car stands a chance with the Aston Martin DB5. The ageless car made its first appearance in the 1964 Bond movie, Goldfinger. The movie was an instant hit, thanks to the James Bond character played by Sean Connery and the amazing Aston Martin DB5 itself.
The iconic car has been featured in six James Bond movies to date, and it has also been cast in the forthcoming 007 movie No Time To Die, where it seems to have assumed its deadliest form, as seen from the trailer.
