The problem with predicting the future is that so often, it fails to live up to the promise. After all, according to Back to the Future and Blade Runner, cars were supposed to be flying in 2015, a concept that looks another century off. There were also ideas like using fusion or other futuristic tech but surprisingly still keeping to realistic aspects. Yet car companies are helpful in aiding movies with concept cars that often show a future for real automotive offerings.

A few concept cars clearly influence today's supercars, while some were ahead of the curve when it comes to ideas like self-driving and electrical systems. Because movie cars don't have to be truly realistic, they can go for some breathtaking designs, but it's better if the car actually exists in real life. These are ten of the coolest concept cars movies have showcased, and one can hope real versions can come to be one day.

10 GM Ultralite - Demolition Man (1993)

via mtb-law.co.uk

This cult Sylvester Stallone sci-fi film is set in a future where Los Angeles has become a nearly crime-free world with the cops having no idea how to handle violence. To fit the futuristic motif, the GM Ultralite is used for the cop cars.

This was the dawn of the electric car era, so it's not surprising the Ultralite is a bit rough but still looks good. At a total weight of 1400 pounds, the 1.5l two-stroke could produce a spry 135 mph and handle nicely. It popped up in a few other futuristic films like Bicentennial Man for a fun future ride.

9 Aston Martin DB10 - Spectre (2007)

Some may be confused why the Aston Martin DB jumps from 9 to 11 in production models. That's because 10 was used for this James Bond movie. Bond "borrows" the car from Q's lab for a trip to Italy which involves a chase with Mr. Hinx (Dave Bautista) through the streets of Rome.

It's only then Bond discovers the car is lacking the usual gadgets and weapons he'd need. But he does have a 4.7l V8 with 430 hp that he uses to outrun Hinx amid Rome's roads. Leave it to Bond to make even a one-off car a thing of beauty.

8 Dodge M4S - The Wraith (1986)

Movie concept cars aren't a new phenomenon, as The Wraith was released in 1986. The little-seen film focuses on a teen racer returned from the dead with a car unlike any on the road. The Dodge M4S fit the bill as a stunningly original ride.

It may have truly been supernatural as somehow the 2.2L four-cylinder was capable of 440 hp and zero to 60 in 4.1 seconds with a top speed just under 200 mph. It also looks absolutely stunning, and those specs for a 1980s car are enough to make you believe it's somehow otherworldly.

7 Aptera 2E - Star Trek (2009)

Star Trek isn't a franchise one would expect ground-based vehicles in, but the 2009 reboot had a great one. Briefly seen during segments at Starfleet Academy, the Aptera 2E is an actually created car despite how it looks like a CGI-crafted prop. The battery-operated hybrid boasted a zero-to-60 speed of 6.3 seconds with a top speed of 90 mph and promised a new future in electric cars.

However, Aptera liquidated just two years after the movie without producing a single regular model. Thus, only in this alternate future could these cars be a common sight on the road.

6 Cadillac Cien - The Island (2005)

Michael Bay's 2005 movie is famous as a massive box office flop but still had some fun looks at a future society. The Cadillac Cien possesses a formidable 7.5-liter V12, which produces 750 hp and 650 lb⋅ft of torque.

It was featured in a wild car chase scene and Bay was such a fan that he used the Cien again for 2014's Transformer Age of Extinction. While it hasn't seen full production yet, the Cien is still an impressive ride fitting for Bay's wild action flicks.

5 Audi RSQ - I Robot (2004)

2004's I, Robot took serious liberties with the book it was based on but captured the feeling of a futuristic society in 2035. The Audi RSQ was a good example and ahead of its time with the idea of a computer-connected car system and ideas used by real Audi cars.

While boasting a good 5.0L Twin-Turbo V10 coupled to a 6-Speed Gearbox, the car was used pretty much as a prop for Will Smith to get in and out of and CGI handling the car chase scenes. But its style was cool, making it look like it was floating on the streets and the minimalist interiors inspiring later models to prove this was a taste of the future.

4 Lexus 2054 - Minority Report (2002)

It makes sense a movie set in the future has a ride unlike anything on the road today. In Steven Spielberg's 2002 sci-fi thriller, roadways are set in the skies with huge moving elevators lifting cars up. Sadly, the engine appears to be lower, a Chevy V6, and most of its excellent performance was CGI.

But the look is gorgeous, better than some Lexus offerings of today, and it was ahead of its time with some hypercar designs. If this is what folks drive in 2054, then the future looks promising.

3 Pontiac Trans Am Firebreather - Jinn (2014)

While a lesser-known movie, 2014's Jinn boasts a sweet ride. The film focuses on a man seeking the aid of a mental patient dealing with a family curse and produced by a Detroit-based film company.

They thus reworked a Camaro into a fantastic machine with a supercharged 6.2l V8 producing 600 hp with six-speed transmission. It's inside an awesome sleek black look and lives up to its name, breathing fire on the road for a ride better than its movie.

2 Acura NSX Roadster - The Avengers (2012)

It makes sense a man who looks into the future like Tony Stark would want a cutting-edge ride. The ride shows up briefly at the movie's end as Tony can't do just an afternoon drive.

I.gaw.net

Based on the 1991 Acura NSX, the Roadster has a sleeker style and boasts fictional specs of a 32-valve engine and tech that only exists in the Marvel Universe. While this was more a prop built for the film, it does look cooler than some of Acura's real hypercars.

1 Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo - Justice League (2017)

Bruce Wayne is, of course, no stranger to some stunning high-tech rides. But one of his coolest doesn't have a Bat-motif at all but rather the amazing Mercedes AMG Vision Gran Turismo shown in Justice League.

via: motor1.com

The engine would be perfect for a Batmobile, a 5.5-liter M157 AMG V8 with an output of 580 hp. Bruce (Ben Affleck) uses it when recruiting the Flash for the team and the famous line when asked what power he has and replies, "I'm rich." One look at this car, and you believe it.
