The Ford Mustang is the most iconic pony car ever to come from the states, and its now 6 decade long run has meant a lot of limited and special edition models. The Mustangs in this list are incredibly rare, with models made in the few thousands, hundreds, and even some one-off versions.

The cars in this list really emphasize the special in special edition and as a result, are some of the coolest special edition Ford Mustangs ever made.

Sporting the classic dark green paint job and black wheels of the original 1968 Mustang GT, the modern version is a fairly accurate recreation. Other signs of the past include an old-school stick shift and a manual-only transmission option. Some upgrades over standard Mustangs of the same year include Ford's GT performance package with Brembo brakes, lowered and stiffened suspension, recalibrated dampers, and a Torsen limited slip diff.

One of the older cars in this list is this special edition Mustang from 1969. This model was given a few unique upgrades over the regular 1969 Mustang of the same era. The main inclusion is a larger 428 cubic-inch engine over the smaller 351 cubic-inch motor seen on other models, hence the name.

The Super Cobra Jet may be the coolest name for any package fitted to any car ever, and came with a shaker hood scoop, a modified crankshaft, and stronger rods for higher revving. This package was to help the Mustang in drag racing, making it a production drag car by all accounts.

With around 7,000 produced, the 2003 Mach 1 is fairly rare and featured a deck lid spoiler, a shaker hood scoop, five spoke wheels, body side scoops, and a fitting 60s styled Mach 1 paint scheme. The Mach 1's 4.6-liter engine from the SVT Cobra was given a set of new, high-flow four-valve cylinder heads and the unique Mach 1 mufflers were tuned to create the perfect sound.

Despite its more traditional Mustang looks, the GT500KR from 2008 is anything but ordinary. This Shelby-Ford collaboration super-Stang came with a 540 hp supercharged V8, making it the most powerful production Mustang of it's time.

Perhaps the only indication that this isn't a regular Mustang is its GT500KR nameplate, meaning King of the Road. It's not all about power, however, this model was made with a lot more carbon fiber making it lighter than the standard GT500 and a new exhaust system was also implemented, as well as some slight tuning and engine remapping.

The GT350H model from the mid 60s was made to satisfy car enthusiasts, with a higher performance than the standard GT350. The H in the GT350H's nameplate signifies Hertz, a corporation which partnered with Shelby, and the result of this collaboration was intended for use as a rental car.

Hertz Sports Car Club members could rent the GT350H for $17 per day and 17 cents per mile. The GT350H came with a 306 hp Cobra V8, a few styling updates, and a Le Mans style paint job.

The most outrageously styled car in this list is this special edition GT350, nicknamed 'Ole Yeller'. This is another car made for auction and, internally and mechanically at least, it's identical to the standard GT350s of the same year.

What makes this Mustang unique is its paint scheme, which is to commemorate the P-51D Mustang aircraft, and it's veteran pilot Bob Hoover. Some bodypanels have also been remade from carbon fiber, and the rear wing is a one-off custom spoiler made specifically for this build.

2 2013 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 Cobra

One of the most special Mustangs in this list, the GT500 Cobra, was made to commemorate the great Carroll Shelby himself. After his passing, Ford, Shelby American and Ford Racing came together to create this relatively unassuming Mustang.

Underneath, however, it's a different story completely. The GT500 Cobra comes equipped with a 4.0-liter supercharger on top of a 5.8-liter V8, making a total of 850 hp. The Cobra's biggest tell are the now 13.5-inch wide rear tires, teamed with wheels that are 13 inches wide and 20 inches in diameter.

Another Mustang that was made with the air force in mind is the 2018 Eagle Squadron Mustang GT. Perhaps the coolest feature is the illuminated RTR front grille, which works perfectly with its stealth like, air force camouflage paint scheme. Completing the exterior is a now much wider carbon fiber body kit and as for inside, leather Recaro race seats replace the standard Ford variants.

One of the best touches inside is the hand-engraved aluminum badge, made from an actual Spitfire plane. The engine is identical to any other 5.0-liter Mustang V8, however, it's received a supercharger slapped on top, helping it generate 700 hp.
