It’s Chevy on Chevy action as Corvettes take on Camaros at the drag strip.
We’ve seen plenty of Dodge versus Mustang battles, but what happens when it’s just Chevy at the party? Apparently a lot of smoke, tire sequel, and noise. So more of the same, only with a bowtie instead of a bullseye or a blue oval.
That’s not to say these races are bad. On the contrary--we have some pretty good matchups starting with a C6-gen Corvette ZR1 and a modern 2019 Chevy Camaro ZL1. The previous-gen Corvette sports a 6.2-L supercharged LS9 V8 engine with 6238 hp and 604 lb-ft of torque. The 2019 Camaro has a 6.2-L supercharged LT4 V8 engine with 650 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. Point one goes to the Camaro.
However, the Corvette is lighter by a good 400 lbs. It's also faster from zero to sixty, reaching that milestone speed in just 3.3 seconds compared to the Camaro ZL1's 3.5 seconds. It also has a higher top speed of 205 mph compared to the Camaro's 190 mph.
What this really comes down to is which one has the better start. And judging by the ear-splitting tire squeal from both cars, neither of them is great at pulling off the line. At first, it seems the Camaro has the better launch, but then the Corvette hooks up slightly sooner and it's a neck-and-neck race.
All that wheelspin at the start certainly cost them both half a second or more, but the final time hands it to the Corvette by a nose. That's 12.41 seconds at 121.72 mph for the Corvette versus 12.68 seconds at 121.44 mph for the Camaro.
That same C6 Corvette ZR1 remains the star of this show, taking on a previous-gen Camaro ZL1 as well as a modern C7 Corvette Z06. That last race gives a great look at how far Chevrolet has come with the Corvette, and makes us eager to see how the new C8-gen Corvette will fare.
