The original Porsche 917/10 is part of a line up of race cars some consider the best race cars ever made, and now one fan is selling his tribute to that car complete with a unique twelve cylinder boxer engine. YouTuber JB91710 documented the build which includes a custom chassis and the pairing of two Subaru EZ30 six cylinder engines joined by a common crankshaft, with the seller noting that the Subaru engines were "Porsche designed." They're asking $40,000 out of Los Angeles.

If the 24 Hours of Le Mans was the upper crust of the sports car racing world, then Can Am was the wild west. Sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of America it was high on horsepower and low on regulations. Bruce McLaren built series dominating cars powered by Chevy V8s until Porsche developed a roadster version of their all conquering 917. The series was short lived, done in by both the dominance of the Porsche 917 and the changes to fuel and environmental standards.

Designed under the supervision of Ferdinand Piech, Ferry Porsche's nephew, Porsche surprised the world with twenty five 5.0 liter racing prototypes to meet the entry requirements for the 24 hours of Le Mans. When that series switched from the 5 liter to 3 liter engines, Porsche looked to Can Am with a turbocharged version of their flat 12 engine, quickly dominating the series.

Replica

This recreation utilizes a custom chassis and recreated bodywork to bring the legendary Can Am car back to life. The tricky part, of course, is the flat 12 power plant that made the car a legend. To replicate that JB91710 took two Subaru Ez30 flat six engines used in the Forester wagons and combined them through a shared crankshaft. Currently the engines aren't connected, but the build video shows the the set up working. The car has been sited at historic events across the country. In 2012 a 917/10 sold for $5,830.000 at the Mecum auctions at Monterey.
