When it comes to recognizable drift cars, and there are one or two around, one stands out from all the others. The legendary Falken Mazda RX-7 of Mr Colton Amster is just a breathtakingly beautiful machine, and quite possibly the most recognizable drift car in the world save for perhaps the Hoonigan monsters that a certain Mr Ken Block loves to throw around the track. However, as legendary automotive photographer and videographer Larry Chen discovers, there is something else cool about this car.

That is in fact the tow car that this RX-7 has. While that might not sound exciting, this tow car certainly is. Amster’s tow car is none other than a truly special Ford Crown Victoria, in full NYPD livery with the flashing lights and everything. It is one of the most amazing drifting cars you can ever see, with perhaps the most epic of tow cars as well. Chen was lucky enough to get the chance to take a look at both of these cars, and explore the two beasts that we see in the video.

The Falken RX-7 Is The Most Famous Drift Car We Know

As Amster says, this car was originally driven by Tony Angelo, and built by Angelo and Chris Forsberg. It is the legendary Falken RX-7, the original made in the early 2000s and the one that started it all in this style, and one that spawned plenty of matchbox toys and was immortalized in Gran Turismo. This RX-7 has been through a lot of peoples hands, and had a fair bit of abuse over the years. So much abuse that at one point, there was very little of this car left, having had a lot of wrecks.

Amster has got it back to a place where he is semi-happy with it, with things like the front bumper still needing replacing because it is not correct. Angelo is helping out with the rebuild and attempting to get some more decals on it and do some promotional drifting. Amster’s ultimate goal is that he hopes he will get the winning teams and cars together with their drivers behind the wheel again, to rekindle the magic of this car’s era of Formula Drift. Amster was able to get the correct banners on the cars and accurate stickers, to really make the restoration as authentic as possible. It even has the correct wheels, and tires from that period which have come as new-old stock.

The Ultimate When It Comes To Towing Cars

Chen then takes a look at the Crown Vic. This is a genuine-decommissioned police car, and it even got used in various Netflix series and Amster was able to get plenty of magnets for the back, so he can change the precinct for the car at the back. The siren and microphone were both reinstalled while the lights were already active on the car as well. It has a 4.6-liter V8 engine under the hood, and while it looks a bit of a mess, it looks very much like it’s still in police service!

Chen finds it funny that the alternator is on the top under the hood as on the Mazda, but it's pretty wild that this is a tow car. Mileage wise, it's done around 100,000 miles which is epic. Amster takes it to Times Square sometimes, and has white magnets to cover the police numbers and emblems up to show it is not an active police car. It is funny when he pulls the stickers off early morning in Times Square, and people on…certain substances notice that!

The RX-7 Is A Car That Easily Draws In The Crowds

Circling back to the Falken RX-7, we get a look in the engine bay of the car. For the most part it is original, with original Falken Blue paint and Amster wants to keep it mostly original as well. Even the original fabrication work and stitch-welding is visible. The engine in here pulls around 600 hp, and it made 500 hp back in the day. Amster also says the power-to-weight ratio of the engine in the FD is incredible, making it just insane to drive.

This video features two of the most incredible cars we’ve seen in a Larry Chen video. We have the epic Falken RX-7, a legend of the drifting world finally coming back to its former glory. And towing it around is an old police Ford Crown Vic, that itself has had an interesting life. To see the Falken RX-7 though back in this condition, with accurate tires, wheels, stickers and livery is a joy to behold. Clearly, its days of heavy competition are over. But it will get used in demo runs, and showcase to the world just what it is capable of doing.
