The Honda CRX is seen as one of the greatest rides in the history of the company’s lineup, and we think there's a compelling case for it being the best sports car they've ever produced. Of course, that’s a huge statement to make because Honda is known for speed, but the CRX is a truly legendary vehicle.

This two-door ride from Honda was produced from 1984 until 1991. So, as you can see, it had a relatively short life when compared to other rides manufactured by the company. Subsequently, it was replaced by the Honda CR-X del Sol for the 1992 model year.

While the Honda CRX may not be the most aesthetically pleasing offering from that time in car history (despite some fans declaring that it is), there's still a great deal to love about this powerful machine. Not only is it fast, but it handles swift turns very well, and it has awesome gas mileage.

We took a look at the Honda CRX, and these are the top three reasons why we're confident it's the best Honda sports car of all time. It should be noted that the specs presented in this article are based on the 1990 model of the Honda CRX.

The Honda CRX Brought Supreme Performance

Of course, with any sports car, the first consideration made is the vehicle’s performance. After all, sports cars are supposed to be fast and have uber impressive engines. So, what about the Honda CRX?

The CRX from Honda is equipped with a 1.6 inline 4-liter engine. According to Edmunds.com, it's capable of a max 108 hp at 6,000 rpm. In terms of torque, it gets 100 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm. While this may not seem all that impressive by today’s standards, this was truly an exceptional feat for Honda.

Now, let’s talk about this ride's all-important acceleration because, for many car lovers, the top speed doesn’t matter if it takes an eternity to reach it. The CRX had no issues in this department. It can achieve 0 to 60 mph in just 7.6 seconds, according to accelerationtimes.com. To put that figure into perspective, at 92 mph, it takes only 16.9 seconds to reach a full quarter-mile.

This famous sports car from Honda has a top speed of 135 mph. While this doesn’t make the Honda CRX the fastest sports car released that year, it is still a true standout from the rest.

An Exception When It Comes To Fuel Economy

Let’s face it, while we all love sports cars, their fuel economy is not usually one of their advantages. With the amount of power these rides are capable of and the speeds they can achieve, they take a great deal more fuel to run than most cars on the market. However, the Honda CRX was one shining exception to the rule.

In terms of fuel economy, this fast offering from Honda runs on regular unleaded fuel and will save any lucky owner at the gas pump. It gets 24 mpg when driven in the city and an awesome 30 when used on the highway. This leads to a combined 27 mpg. In other words, a full tank of gas, which is 11.9 gallons, will get you 285.6 miles in the city and 357 on the highway.

This was especially important during the time Honda was still producing the CRX. The 1973 oil crisis saw many people become more frugal with their fuel purchases. The change in perspectives helped make the CRX popular because driving one allowed owners to hit high speeds without spending a ton on fuel.

This Sports Car Is Super Rare

Another big reason why we believe the Honda CRX is the best sports car from Honda is that it’s so rare. The reason for this is the fact that the last time this car was produced was in the early '90s. There were close to 400,000 CRXs sold during the years of production, but they are now hard to find for adoring fans who, in many cases, have never seen one in person.

The fact that the CRX is so rare adds to its value, not only in terms of monetary value but also in terms of how much enthusiasts and gearheads alike cherish this little sports car. People simply don’t care as much about the things they can see every day. Sure, Honda has made some amazing sports cars since the CRX ended production, but those rides can be seen everywhere.

Currently, for those fortunate enough to track down a used Honda CRX, they'd pay about $70,000 for the honor of owning one. Of course, that number could be much higher depending on any modifications that have been done to this rare beauty.

The Honda CRX Is A Ride For The Ages

Honda found true success with the CRX. This ride is not only fast for its time, but the company was able to create a sports car that could help address the concerns of many during a difficult time in American history. What the lasting success of the CRX proves is that while everyone loves an attractive vehicle, that's not always the main concern. Sometimes what’s under the hood can more than make up for a straightforward design, or in this case, an appearance that, by some people's standards, is a little ugly.

While the CRX firmly holds its place in the history of Honda and of sports cars in general, there have been talks that the CRX may return as a new model. There is no concrete information about a possible comeback from this iconic sports car, but the company is said to have trademarked the name again back in 2020. Only time will tell if future drivers are treated to an updated model of the now-classic car.
