Back in 1979 thanks to Yoshiyuki Tomino’s and Sunrise’s series anime Mobile Suit Gundam, the Gundam RX-78-2 was introduced to the world. Recently, K-Speed released images on Instagram of their “Grom Gundam Limited Edition” evoking the spirit of the fictional manned robot with a modification for the Honda Grom. The series has survived for decades, but this new 2021 build from K-Speed was intended to take things back to where it all began. K-Speed is a Thai-based shop that builds custom bikes and sells aftermarket accessories.

The Grom’s Cult Following

Since its launch, the Grom, or more traditionally the Honda MX125, has had a cult following and over time has seen countless, insane custom jobs. Once it was even armed with the Ducati 1199 Panigale R’s engine. In response to the monkey bike fans out there, Honda introduced the 2021 Grom that can transform into a mortars, a scrambler, or even an ADV. Six bolts hold each panel in place, making the swapping of panels just a few minute task.

The Giant Robot Gundam Was The Kit’s Inspiration

This pint-sized bike is modeled along the lines of the giant robot from the popular anime, Gundam. The inspiration for the K-Speed bike was the Gundam RX-78-2, which was the original manned robot from the 1979 series Mobile Suit Gundam. To handle the licensing issues that would naturally have to be resolved, in December of 2020 A.P. Honda, the official Honda subsidiary in Thailand, collaborated with Dream Express Company Limited, who currently hold the copyright to the Gundam name, to create the Honda Monkey Gundam Limited Edition. This could be a precursor to upcoming bolt-on accessory kits becoming available, but nothing has been announced as of yet.

The Kit May Or May Not Be Sold Separately

In the past K-Speed models the Royal Enfield Continental GT650 and Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 were known for their bolt-on kits. These kits can allow a rider to customize a bike at home. The kit comes with a butch-looking fuel tank cover, as well as a belly pan, headlight break, a new seat and a sleek tail section. A stubby unit from K-Speed will replace the stock exhaust and as expected, every piece is painted to match the parts of the mechabot.

The kit is not yet offered for sale. However, the “Super Grom” kit is currently available through K-Speed and many of the same components are the same as those in Gundam kit. Various color schemes are available.
