The Ferrari 488 GTB holds the distinction of being the first mid-engine Ferrari sports car powered by a turbocharged V8 engine since the F40. Replaced by the F8 Tributo in February 2019, a new 488 GTB is valued at more than $250,000. A used one still commands a high price. At such price range, it's only natural to inspect the Ferrari first before buying it from a third-party seller.

Content creator Damon Fryer, known for his DailyDrivenExotics (DDE) YouTube channel, learned a lesson the hard way, after finding thousands of dollars worth of damage to his 2017 Ferrari 488 GTB.

Preparing For A New Livery Wrap

Fryer was in Vancouver to prepare his Ferrari for a new project. DDE's Ferrari Winter Beater Project entails wrapping the 488 GTB in a new special livery ordered, printed and shipped from California, as well as installing a some winter-ready equipment. To prepare the Ferrari, they tapped a professional to remove the parts that would get in the way during the wrapping process.

Among the parts removed from Fryer's 488 GTB were the the front and rear bumpers, antenna, door mirrors, door handles, and the Ferrari shield. Just removing the antenna, mirrors and handles required the crew to tear down the some sections of the interior. But bad news greeted Fryer once the bumpers were removed.

Just a few days previously, Fyer used his Ferrari 488 GTB as a snow plow, clearing snow from the driveway. The bevy of surprises and damage found on his Ferrari however, all occurred long long before that, and was unseen by Fryer at the time of purchase.

Fryer discovered that the 488 GTB was actually repainted and there were sections that were damaged from sandblasting. The whole bottom panel was also damaged and has to be repaired. Various sections were also glued on. According to Raymond's estimate, the 488 GTB has up to $25,000 of damage.

Winter Beater Project Goes On

Fryer admitted not doing extra diligence to thoroughly inspect the 488 GTB when he bought it from a third-party seller. Lessons learned! Nonetheless, the situation didn't stop him from proceeding to his winter project, and everything seems going well.
