The Ford GT is one of the best supercars to come from America, and certainly one of the best supercars of modern times. The Ford icon is soon to leave production, after a run stretching back to 2016, and it is a sad occasion for many. However, this is not the first GT. Of course, it can trace its origins right back to the Ford GT40, but it is the real successor for the 2005 model of the Ford GT.

This is the first generation of the GT, and it made its debut back in 2005 after beginning life as a concept car. The car might have been a gas guzzler, but it is still a popular and well-loved car and one that car guru Doug DeMuro is lucky enough to own. He has owned one 2005 Ford GT for some four years now, and it is about to clock over the 40,000-mile mark. So he has given us all a bit of an update on his GT, and what its been like to live with after 40,000 miles.

A Relatively High-Mile Example Of The Ford GT

DeMuro bought this car back in 2018, proclaiming it to be his dream car. He was quite terrified of it at the time, having never bought anything so expensive at the time. It had around 31,000 miles at the time, and it is now approaching the 40,000-mile mark. That is quite a high mark given that many of these Ford GTs have so few miles, with many of them still virtually brand new. It is fair to say that DeMuro is getting his monies worth with this Ford GT.

DeMuro says that while you lose value with the GT when you drive it, he thinks it is a shame that so many of these cars are sat with as few as 26 miles on the clock. People knew they would become collectors items, hence so many with low miles. DeMuro thinks it is a shame that so many people have not enjoyed the car, and simply kept them as part of a collection just because they can say they own it. DeMuro does say though that, despite one breakdown after a loose battery ground, that his Ford GT has been ultra-reliable and owning one has been a dream.

Touching Upon The Jeremy Clarkson Problems

DeMuro references the trouble that Jeremy Clarkson had with his Ford GT. But DeMuro was able to speak to James May about this, and those problems were with the aftermarket alarm system and immobilizer that the insurance company Clarkson used made him install. The vehicle itself though was absolutely fine. DeMuro says that has been his experience too, with it never throwing up any other issue bar that one battery issue. For a car that is some 17 years old, it is rock solid and that is highly impressive.

When it comes to cost, with all the maintenance and servicing etc on the car, it has cost DeMuro $11,513.05. The car is due for another service just after this video went live, though so DeMuro puts it at around the $13,000 mark. His Land Rover Defender has cost him about the same as well over the same period, and the mileage has also only been a bit more on the Defender as well. For an exotic car though, that cost for the GT really is not that bad. DeMuro has certainly done well with the car so far.

DeMuro does talk about the value of the car. When he bought it back in 2018, he paid $225,000 for the GT. At the time he thought he was overpaying but thought it was worth it as it had all the receipts, good maintenance, and it was from its original owner. DeMuro believes it is in the $325,000 - $360,000 range, and a higher mileage example sold for $345,000 on Cars and Bids. DeMuro believes he got this car at the perfect time, and he certainly would be paying a lot more were he to buy it in 2022.

An Iconic Car And A Usable One As Well

DeMuro believes unlike cars like the Ferrari F40 and Lamborghini Countach, the Ford GT is a usable car that is also iconic. He takes it most places, he can have his dog in it, and it works in everyday situations. Plus, it is great fun to drive. DeMuro says the biggest drawback is simply the amount of people that try to race you when they see it, weirdly it's more so with the Ford GT than any other sports car he has had. It has grown in value and DeMuro is a little bit more nervous to drive it, but he absolutely loves it despite that.
