Back in 2003, Nismo launched the GT-R Z-Tune special project to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The R34’s production had ended a year earlier, so Nismo went out and bought used examples that had less than 29,000 miles on their odometers. In the end, they built 19, including this beauty that was finished in Midnight Purple III, which recently received a detailing. Check it out.

The Process

In order to build these R34 Skyline GT-R Z-Tunes, Nismo stripped down each car and rebuilt them with inspiration from the GT-R Motorsport programs. They took the 2.6-liter twin-turbocharged inline-6 and bumped it up to 2.8 liters and upgraded the turbochargers. This pushed output up to 500 horsepower.

Only one of the cars kept its original Midnight Purple III paint job. The rest were finished in a special Z-Tune Silver. That Purple Skywalker isn’t what you’re seeing here, rather this car was repainted Midnight Purple III at the Nismo factory in 2018. The detailing on the Z-Tune seen here was done by Auto Attention of Melbourne, Australia.

Unfortunately, we’re still years away from R34 becoming eligible for import to the United States. The first R34 generation Skyline models appeared in 1998, so they will become eligible for import in 2023. However, it wasn’t until a year later that the GT-R variant came about. That means that it won’t be until 2024 that the Godzilla will become available in the States.
