Vehicle reviews can't always be about high-performance luxury importance — families need cars, too. Such is the case with the latest video from the Bros Fourr Speed YouTube channel as presenter Mike walks around and gets behind the wheel of a 2022 Ford Explorer Timberline.

Exploring The Explorer: From The Outside

The video begins with a look at the outside of a white Explorer. At a glance, it appears just like all the other Ford Explorers on the road. But Mike points out what separates the Timberline trim from the rest of the pack.

To start with, the front end gets emblazoned with an orange border accent below the bumper, and it's coordinated with orange tow hooks. From the side, we see 18-inch black-finish wheels wrapped in off-road-capable rubber. Black exterior accents replace chrome finishes. The Timberline also stands one inch taller than other versions.

Before setting off on a short test drive, Mike checks out the back two rows to confirm plenty of room for his 5'10" frame. Viewers also get a quick walk-through of the instrument cluster and infotainment system. He inadvertently calls the upholstery leather, but it's actually a Ford ActiveX (the automaker's marketing term for leatherette).

Once behind the wheel, Mike checks out the trail mode (the car is on grass) and switches to sport mode once on the road. The turbo-four promises a 0-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds, and this gets backed up by his "It will get up and move" remark. Mike adds that the Explorer Timberline is "A very capable, all-around SUV."

Interestingly, we learn that 56 percent of Explorer owners, according to Ford, take their vehicles off the pavement. So, the automaker developed the Timberline to provide modest off-road capabilities—it also targets other cars like the Subaru Outback Wilderness.

The Timberline version sits in the middle of the Explorer's eight-trim lineup. With no options, this SUV stickers at just under $49,000. But, add a few major extras like a power moon roof and the technology upgrade, and the price climbs above $52,000. In comparison, a base Explorer starts at $35,000 while a fully loaded King Ranch crosses the $60,000 mark.

Mid-tier (and lower) Explorers (including the Timberline) get one power plant — a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder making 300 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. A 10-speed automatic with paddle shifters controls the Timberline's standard all-wheel drive.

A hybrid V6 setup is optional on the Limited and standard with the Platinum. The ST and King Ranch have the stomping 400-horsepower twin-turbo V6 (it's available with the Platinum).
