One advantage that forced induction motors have over normally-aspirated engines is tuning ability. A simple tune can often yield substantial power increases to a turbocharged or supercharged engine.

Sam CarLegion posted a video on their YouTube Channel showing a tuned BMW 340i going up against a stock Dodge Challenger Hellcat and a tuned Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. Will a tune give the BMW enough power to outrun the Stellantis heavyweights?

The Specifications

The BMW is a 2018 340i M Performance model. It has a tune that enables this motor to put out 550 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. That is a substantial bump from the stock 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine which makes 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. The power goes to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission.

The Dodge Challenger Hellcat is completely stock. It has a 6.2-liter supercharged V8 pumping out 717 hp and 656 lb-ft of torque. This car has an 8-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk has the same 6.2-liter supercharged V8 and 8-speed automatic transmission as the Challenger Hellcat. But the Grand Cherokee sends its power to the pavement via all-wheel-drive. The Trackhawk in this video also has a tune that increases the engine's output to 810 hp and 755 lb-ft of torque.

The Results

Trackhawk versus Challenger Hellcat versus 340i
Sam CarLegion via YouTube Channel

The first race is from a dig. The Trackhawk leaps ahead at the start and maintains the lead all the way until the end. The BMW finishes in second with the Challenger Hellcat trailing in third place.

There is a second race from a dig, but this time a different driver is behind the wheel of the BMW. The driver modification makes a difference as the 340i gets a better launch and stays even with the Trackhawk until the very end when it reaches the finish line first. Once again, the Challenger Hellcat finishes in last place.

The third and final competition is a roll race. The Trackhawk takes the early lead and finishes slightly ahead of the 340i. The Challenger Hellcat comes in last, causing Sam to ask the driver if everything is okay with the car.

Would the Challenger Hellcat have fared better with a tune like the BMW 340i or Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk? Perhaps an increase in power may have improved its performance in the roll race. However, any power increase to the Challenger Hellcat would likely cause more traction issues that would hinder acceleration from a standing start.
