The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was the last of the legends with all hopes crushed of a revival. The Demon has given way to the Hellcat, and while the latter packs plenty of punch, those who idolized the Demon may not be happy with the consolation prize.

The Hellcat accompanies both the Challenger and the Charger nameplates, but the Challenger Demon was simply a class apart in looks, style, speed, and performance. This was a car meant for those who wanted a superhero (or villain) under their hood and knew what to do with it as well. So here are ten things you may not have known about the Dodge Demon, now that it rests in peace.

10 The Demon Means Different Things

The Dodge Demon doesn’t just refer to the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon alone – in the past, this moniker has stood for different things as well. Initially, the Dodge Demon referred to as the muscle car of the 60s and 70s, the Dodge Dart, a sister car of the Plymouth Valiant.

Later, in 2007, Daimler-Chrysler unveiled a concept car that would have gone under the Viper nameplate, and it was dubbed the Dodge Demon. But it wasn’t until 2017 (2018 model) that the Dodge Demon truly came to life as a high-performance package of the Challenger, when everyone truly understood what a Demon was capable of.

9 The Ultimate Bat From Hell

The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was the ultimate in muscle cars. A 6.2-liter HEMI V8 engine paired with a 2.7-liter supercharger made this beast roar out 808 horsepower. If you used high-octane fuel, the horses jump up to a massive 840, with the torque going up to 770 ft-lb as well.

And despite its utter, sheer and insane power – this baby was street legal. The tires were also road legal but basically made special to be able to withstand the g-force with which the Demon chewed out roads. This way, the Demon became the first consumer car to carry a set of drag radial road tires on it.

8 It Breathes Deep

The Demon bears a big V8 and this V8 mill breathes in really deep to give you that quarter-mile sprint of 9.65 seconds at 140.09mph. To do so, the big breath it takes is approximately 173 cubic feet of air. In case that figure seems too small to you, let us tell you that 173 cubic feet of air, is the lung capacity (deep, deep breaths) of 816 human beings.

Yeah, now you get it! Of course, you need a very big nose to breathe in so much air which is why the Demon has a trademarked Air Grabber system. As in, the hood scoop is the largest functional nose on any production car till now, at 45.2 square inches.

7 The NHRA Did Ban It

Added to the insane 9.65-second quarter-mile sprint, there is a 0-30mph spring of one flat second, and 0-60mph in 2.3 seconds, making it the world’s fastest street-legal production car. The downside to this was that the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) required that any vehicle with a quarter-mile time of fewer than 10 seconds had to have an NHRA-certified roll cage.

Since the Demon didn’t have it, it was banned from competing, period. Some like to say the Demon was banned because it was too fast. It was banned because it did not have the requisite crash-safety roll cage that cars with this insane speed should if they want to compete.

6 One Very Hot Engine

With such massive performance comes massive engine heat that the V8’s cooling system had to quickly tackle lest the car caught fire. The amount of work the fire prevention department of the V8, aka the cooling system, had to do was astronomical.

It basically quenched some 258kW of heat power, which is like 250 toasters all trying to ignite a fire under the hood. This kind of heat could boil 4 cups of water in a little more than a second. As powerful the engine is in the Demon, we bow to the superiority of the cooling systems without which the driver would be toast.

5 The Crushing Power Of Demon’s V8

Safe to say, we have painted a picture of the Demon’s V8 as a massive beast. But perhaps we may not have successfully verbalized exactly how powerful, in terms of force or as we like to call, bone-crushing power the V8 is.

Each engine stroke puts an 11-tonne might behind the piston and the rod, more than the weight of five Demons put together. If this mind-boggling show of force is not enough, at 6,300 RPM, this 11 tonnes of force strikes more than 50 times per second to really get the V8 going. How else do you think the V8 manages to jet out 840 horses?

4 It Has A Lot Of First-Evers

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the highest horsepower production V8 in the world, and the first production car designed to run on high octane fuel. Since it does 0-60mph in an insanely dizzying 2.3 seconds, it has one of the highest acceleration g-forces in any production car in the world – that of 1.8g.

While many production cars have the option of a rear seat delete, the Demon lets you delete the front passenger seat as well – not just to enjoy the awesome interiors yourself, but to reduce weight and drag for it to go even faster. With you and the Demon, nothing is lonesome.

3 The Awesome Torque Reserve

The Demon is the world’s first production car to have a torque reserve which basically holds on to 8 psi of power so jetted out from the 2.7-liter supercharger. And it does this by closing off the supercharger’s bypass valve – this stops the air from recirculating and holds it in reserve for a powerful starting line launch.

Remember that the supercharger spins at the engine rpm because there is no clutch disconnect. Then, the fuel flow, as well as the spark timings are also held back, to rein in the engine between 1000-2400 RPM. So it’s like the Torque Reserve is holding in a big breath to let everything out in a massive whoomph. But what holds the car stationary? Read the next point.

2 That Amazing Transbrake

For those of you not much in tandem with the world of drag racing, a trans brake is a mechanism that lest your drag racer be in first gear and reverse gear, simultaneously. This is the reason all these Fast and Furious cars seemed to dance at the starting line, seeming high on meth and too wired to stay still (we are still talking about the cars only).

This builds up an immense hydraulic pressure in the transmission, and coupled with the torque – it jets out the car from the starting line into amazing speeds. The Demon has the Transbrake, and what’s more – it’s the world’s first production car to have one. How amazing is that!

1 It Horsed Around For Guinness

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is more than just a performance car. It has sass, and one of the sassiest things it does is lift its front wheels at launch – when used in tandem with the Transbrake and the Torque Reserve.

It actually made a Guinness World Record of a production car doing the longest wheelie at 2.92 feet, from a standing start. So it doesn’t just drive fast, it also drives cool. Basically the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the ultimate muscle car ever – and would appeal to all car lovers and car show offs all over the world. If only, the Demon was still alive…
