When it was unveiled in 2017 at the New York Auto Show, the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was advertised as being capable of reaching a quarter mile in just 9.65 seconds. This official time has never been shattered by any stock Demon. But that changed days ago when a Challenger SRT Demon completed the quarter-mile run quicker than 9.65 seconds. The rest is history.

Official Time Too Hard to Shatter

It isn't surprising that Demon owners have been trying to equal or breach the 9.65-second barrier. After all, if you have a muscle car with 840 hp of max output coming from a supercharged V8 engine, you’ll find the urge to make full use of such power too hard to resist. Ever since the first Demons were delivered, their owners have frequently come to the drag strip.

Of course, there are Demon owners who managed to cover the quarter mile under 9.65 seconds. However, these owners implemented various modifications to their rides, such as tuning its supercharged V8 engine to deliver more power or trimming the car’s weight drastically. But so far, none was able to breach the barrier using a Demon with stock power and stock weight.

The Barrier Has Been Breached

December 19, 2019 was a fateful day not just for Dodge Challenger SRT Demon owner Byron Godbee, but also for other Demon owners. Driving a white Demon – with production number 3299 -- at The House of Hook drag strip in South Carolina, Godbee managed to go under 9.65 seconds. To note, Godbee’s white Demon featured stock power and stock weight. The only modifications are Billet Specialties wheels shod with Mickey Thompson drag radials.

As reported by Allpar.com, Godbee’s white Dodge Challenger SRT Demon #3299 completed the quarter-mile run in just 9.57 seconds, or around 0.08 seconds quicker than the official time. Godbee – the man behind the Legion of Demons organization and racing series – wanted to support his time with another run. The next attempt was a bit slower at 9.58 seconds, but it just further confirmed that the 9.65-second barrier has just been breached.

Newfound Confidence

With Godbee now the first private owner of a 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon breaching the official quarter-mile time of 9.65 seconds, a whole new scenario comes up. For the past two years, Demon owners were beginning to doubt if the official time could be shattered. But now that it has been breached, Demon owners have a newfound confidence that they too can go quicker than the official advertised time of their rides.
