If you’ve been keeping a close eye on Dodge, their recent announcements have taken a toll on enthusiasts. CEO Tim Kuniskis was pretty open about Mopar moving towards a sustainable future and many of their screaming V8s might not be around for long.

Another marque that’s probably gonna switch to some form of electric assistance is Jeep. Because internal combustion engines are under immense scrutiny, the chances of a fuel-chugging V8 living to see the next decade is slim to none.

However, before this masterful stroke of emotion and excess bids a farewell, Stellantis has practical offerings to liven things up. Although having a performance V8 in a shell that seats the whole family seems oxymoronic, we have the Dodge Durango SRT and Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT for those who don't.

Dodge Durango is the more sensible here as opposed to the Jeep just because of its two additional seats. However, with the 2021 Grand Cherokee L seating for seven is not a problem.

While these cars may be at an end, there’s no denying the sheer absurdity they bring to the table. Waffle aside then, let’s take a closer look at the 2021 SRT-tuned Dodge Durango and Jeep Grand Cherokee and see which one’s for you.

Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT: A Brief

If you know your Jeeps, then the Grand Cherokee must be a familiar name. Jeep’s flagship SUV has always been at the forefront of impressive off-road performance coupled with luxurious interiors. Comfort and practicality play an equally important role in the Grand Cherokee as does its capabilities off the beaten path. If anything, SRT’s intervention to Jeep’s ethos has only amplified the Grand Cherokee’s utilitarian prowess.

Let’s go over some of the headline figures. The Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT houses a 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V8 that makes a robust 475 horsepower and a 470 lb-ft of torque. Drivetrain includes an 8-speed torque converter sending power to all four wheels. Apart from the 20-inch rims and upgraded brakes, everything else is more or less a regular Grand Cherokee. Visually, the Cherokee SRT has a wider stance thanks to increased wheel track for better stability.

Also, there are no fake vents anywhere. As you move towards the rear, the SRT badge and the diffuser with fairly large dual exhausts are signs that you ought to reconsider your thoughts of racing against this. According to Jeep, the Grand Cherokee SRT manages to hit 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and has a top speed of 160 mph. If you’re concerned about the quarter-mile times, then the Cherokee SRT manages to complete the course in 13.0 seconds. In terms of towing, the V8-equipped Cherokee SRT can manage to haul up to 7,200 pounds.

Dodge Durango SRT: A Brief

Dodge has grown to become a household name. While the Challenger takes care of the sporty bits, the Charger and Durango take care of the sensible side of things. That is until SRT steps in. Much like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the folks at SRT have given the Durango the same internals. Power figures are identical at 475 horses and 470 lb-ft of twist. The SRT V8 is capable of launching this practical 7-seater to 60 mph in 4.1 seconds and while the standing quarter-mile comes in at 12.7 seconds. Top speed of the Dodge Durango SRT 392 is limited to 155 mph which is marginally lesser than its Stellantis sibling. However, in terms of towing, the Durango SRT has the Cherokee beat with a maximum rating of 8,700 pounds.

All this doesn’t mean the Durango SRT is impractical. As standard, you get the usual U-connect 8.4-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Also, part of the package is a stunning 19-speaker Harman/Kardon audio system along with leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats. All this with the practicality of having 7 seats makes the Dodge Durango SRT one of the easiest cars to get your wife’s approval.

Dodge Durango SRT Vs Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT: Our Take

At $66,095, the 2021 Dodge Durango SRT 392 is far from the most rational choice of wheels. With an MSRP of $71,435, the Jeep Cherokee SRT isn’t any good either. However, if you’re after rational life choices, we’d advise you to stay away from these two. That being said, both of them are plenty good for a recreational day with the family. While their miserable MPGs won’t attract your attention, their sumptuous exhaust notes and ridiculous horsepower on offer are enough to gravitate towards them. Frankly, if you’re looking for a bit more luxury, the Cherokee SRT should be ideal. However, if you’re after practicality, the Durango should serve the purpose a bit better.

We understand they’re not as luxurious nor as capable of an off-roader as a Range Rover. However, the sheer absurdity presented in a package that’s in the ballpark of a mid-spec Ford Expedition is enough to get us giddy. While any rational family man would think twice before stepping in and ordering these monstrously wild machines, if you have the means then we’d say why not?
