Mat Watson and CarWowMat Watson and CarWow love a good drag race. And their drag races are usually very good indeed. Be it with a load of supercars, EVs or even an SUV. The channel has it all. In this latest CarWow drag race, Watson is drag racing his own BMW M3 Competition against the all-electric performance sedan from BMW, the i4 M50. The M3 Competition has a 3.0-liter straight-six engine with 510 hp, while the electric motors in the i4 M50 give out 544 hp. This could be very interesting.

Launch Is Key In A Drag Race

The i4 M50 does have some advantages over the M3. It's all-wheel drive, it's got more power and has more traction than the M3. But it is a lot heavier, at 2.2 tons. This compares to the 1.7 tons of the M3 Competition. Time for the drag racing, and the first race sees the all-electric i4 M50 get a great start, but Watson nails it in his M3 to make it pretty even. But then the M3 Competition starts to pull away from its electric rival, to win that first, but close, race.

Trying To Uphold Combustion’s Honor

Watson lines the cars up again to give it another go, and see if he can maintain the honor of combustion power. This time though, the i4 M50 gets a better launch than Watson, but the M3 does start to reel it in. At the line though, the i4 M50 held on but it was so, so close between the two cars. Time for the best of three, and in the third race the cars get off the line very, very evenly. But Watson pulls ahead to make it two out of three for internal combustion power.

Carrying On With The Challenges

Next up is a rolling race from 50 mph in comfort mode. This sees the electric BMW just fly off, but then the M3 Competition reels it in to make it another M3 win. The next race in manual and sport modes sees exactly the same story and outcome. Great i4 M50 launch, then an M3 win. A bonus rolling race from 30 mph gives the i4 M50 a better chance to win, and it shoots off, and this time it holds off the M3 Competition for a good while longer. Finally, it’s the braking test. And the electric BMW definitely won that challenge, stopping quite a bit sooner than the M3 Competition.
