If they can't break your record, break it yourself. Nearly three weeks ago, a McLaren 765LT supercar in a break-in mode managed to take throne of being the quickest production car in the quarter mile away from the Dodge Demon. Fast forward, the same McLaren broke its own record, leaving no doubts over its dominance of the drag strip.

765LT As Quickest Production Car On The Quarter Mile

The automotive industry has already arrived at a point where stock production cars (no modifications) are quick enough to break the 10-second barrier in a quarter-mile run. McLaren's Super Series metals have been exemplary in this regards. A recently delivered McLaren 765LT owned by DragTimes Brooks Weisblat is a proof of this, recording super-quick official quarter-mile times that other supercars could only dream about.

After around a year and a half, Brooks' 765LT was finally delivered in January and subsequently logged a new record. Some people had disquiet over the new quarter mile record, saying it achieved on non-OEM Toyo R888R sticky tires. To calm the complaints, Brooks simply brought back the 765LT to that drag strip and completed a quarter-mile pass in 9.37 seconds at 151.83 mph – riding on OEM Pirelli PZero tires.

Weeks Ago: 9.33 On Slick Rubbers, 9.41 On Stock Tires

What happened? While breaking in the 765LT, Brooks already knew the 765LT is capable of hitting 9.9 seconds on the quarter-mile. But he didn't expect the Super Series (on OEM Pirelli PZero rubbers) to reach the quarter mile in just 9.41 seconds at 150.03 mph. That was a new record for the quickest production car in the quarter mile!

Brooks then decided to swap the OEM Pirelli tires with sticky Toyo tires, which offer acceleration benefits (greater grip) in quarter mile passes. The swap was a success, since the 765LT posted a quarter-mile time of 9.33 seconds at 150.87 mph, and was posting similar times thereafter.

A New Record That Broke Another New Record

There was never really an issue, because even if the non-OEM quarter-mile times were dropped, 9.41 seconds was still a new record that quashed the Demon's time of 9.57 seconds. Nonetheless, the issues are now both moot and academic since an all-stock 765LT (all-stock) broke its own record at 9.37 seconds.
