A drunk driver survived after traveling on the wrong side of the highway for miles before colliding with a semi truck.
Viewer discretion is most certainly advised for this one as it doesn’t end well for either truck. Although both drivers reportedly survived, so there’s that at least.
Our story comes from northwest Illinois on the I-74 highway near a town called Orion. A concerned citizen noticed a white Chevrolet Silverado pickup driving westbound in the eastbound lanes. He called the cops to report the issue and then got out his cellphone camera and started recording.
Which is dangerous since that concerned citizen was also driving at the time, but not as dangerous as traveling against traffic on a semi-busy highway.
It becomes evident pretty quickly that there is at least something wrong with the driver of that Silverado. He passes several opportunities where he could have pulled over or turned around, and also completely ignores several insistent honks from people trying to tell him he’s going the wrong way.
One semi truck passes by without a collision, but eventually, the Silverado’s luck runs out. A red-painted semi isn’t quite able to swerve out of the way in time and clips the Silverado’s passenger side. At speeds of 60 mph from both vehicles, even a tiny clip is enough to completely cave in the Silverado’s right side, and completely demolish the semi.
It’s not shown on the YouTube video, but WQAB has a video that shows the aftermath of both trucks. The semi burns to the ground in the median, while the Silverado gets carted away as a total wreck.
WQAB reports that both drivers survived but were taken to hospital. The highway was shut down for several hours for cleanup. The Silverado driver was identified as a 24-year-old from Iowa who was later charged with DUI and driving on the wrong side of the road.
