The embargo for most automotive journalists to review the new Maserati MC20 supercar lifted only two days ago, as driving impressions appear to heap more praise upon the stunning design from an Italian brand that hopes to get back to its historical roots with this fun new project. But even though—or perhaps because—you can't just walk into a Maserati dealer and pick up the new MC20, the prolific seller Wob on Bring a Trailer just listed one for sale at auction where it already sits above the window sticker's MSRP price.

Maserati's Stunning New Supercar

Clearly, Maserati should have taken a cue from Ford and put a no-flip clause into sales contracts that MC20 buyers sign before picking up their new supercars. And on paper, the MC20 and GT actually line up somewhat well, both employing a twin-turbocharged V6 mounted amidships in a carbon-fiber chassis and powering the rear wheels through a dual-clutch automatic transaxle only. But the Maserati's exterior design looks a lot less radical than the Ford GT's, thanks to smooth lines, integrated exhaust tips, and a nose that certainly harkens back to previous models in the company's long history, as well as the MC12 supercar penned by iconic designer Frank Stephenson.

621 Horsepower From A Twin-Turbo V6

The MC20 also benefits from an eight-speed dual-clutch bo, though its twin-turbo V6 is down on both displacement and power at 3.0 liters with 621 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque. As might seem expected, the MC20 also weighs a bit more at a hair over 3,300 pounds. It does, however, leave the factory equipped with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential to help put that grunt to the ground, and this specific example came optioned with 20-inch wheels measuring 305 millimeters wide at the rear, carbon-ceramic brakes all around, and a suspension lift system for those steep driveway slopes.

Paddle Shifters And Carbon Fiber Everything

The interior looks pure supercar, with carbon fiber and Alcantara on nearly every surface. The flat-bottom steering wheel features paddle shifters ahead of the digital gauge cluster, which seems to show a redline of 8,000 RPM despite the odometer reading only 86 miles—whether Maserati recommends a break-in period for the powertrain before allowing access to the full rev range remains a mystery. What has become extremely clear immediately, however, is that the Trident scored a hit with the MC20, given that bidding already sits at $265,000 from a sticker price of $250,395 with a full 12 days remaining until the final gavel. And someone put all that money on the line without the owner having received the car's title yet!
