EarthRoamer has been creating unique luxury off-road vehicles since 1998. Their latest and greatest model, the XV-HD, is a truck that is both rugged and elegant. It is loaded with a ton of features and luxury amenities that propel it to a price of around $1.7 million. The XV-HD debuted at SEMA 2017 as a customizable overlanding vehicle built on a F-750 chassis.

The ultimate luxury off-grid vehicle would successfully integrate a premium feel with the dynamic handling of an off-road truck. Considering the sheer quantity of vehicles designed for off-grid living and the availability of luxurious RVs, does the EarthRoamer truly hold its own in the market?

Here we will discover the features of the EarthRoamer XV-HD and determine if it is truly the most luxurious off-grid vehicle available.

The EarthRoamer Design

The EarthRoamer HD is based on a Ford F-750 King Ranch chassis. Since the chassis doesn't come standard with 4wd, it is modified by EarthRoamer to provide 4x4 capabilities. Power is derived from a 6.7L V8 turbo diesel that is capable of 330hp and 725lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with a heavy-duty 6-speed TorqShift transmission.

The F750 chassis is upgraded with a front solid drive axle and user-selectable transfer case. This off-grid vehicle was designed to be customizable and users can work with EarthRoamer's design team to create their ideal rig. Multiple floor plans are offered with custom-built specifications.

Power & Off-Road Performance

Off-road comfort is enhanced by a rear air ride suspension along with 46” Michelin XZL tires and Fox shocks in the front and rear. The chassis is structurally enhanced by a “vacuum-infused” composite construction and can be leveled on most surfaces using the hydraulic system. Spray foam insulation helps maintain stable temperatures within the vehicle and preserve energy expenditure on heating and cooling. Many terrain types are navigable with the EarthRoamer’s 6.7L turbo diesel.

Interior Amenities

In contrast to typical RV and overlanding vehicles, the EarthRoamer does not make use of propane. It is powered fully on solar, using radiant heat from the floor during the winter and dual roof-mounted DC air conditioners during the summer. Independent zones allow for heating or cooling certain areas in order to preserve battery usage and provide temperature management where it is most needed.

Appliances & Electric Systems

2100 watts of solar power are available in the EarthRoamer HD; Energy is supplied to a 20kW lithium battery bank. This bank is charged via high amperage alternators. Every system in the vehicle can be monitored and toggled via central controls. In “Store Mode”, all-electric systems are automatically powered down for a battery conserving status. The exterior provides a shower for cleaning off prior to entering the vehicle and a slide-out kitchen to cook outdoors when the weather permits.

Storage Capacity & Comfort

One of the most important factors in an off-grid vehicle is the capacity to store wastewater. The EarthRoamer incorporates significant tank capacities of 125gal for both black and gray water. Along with the 250gal fresh water tank, these could last two people around 2-3 weeks during typical use. A 115gal diesel tank combined with a fuel economy of approximately 7-8mpg gives the EarthRoamer a range-topping 800 miles.

Pricing & Relative Value

The EarthRoamer does provide customers with a luxury interior and some off-road capabilities. However, some of the competition offers comparable features with a more aggressive build. The Mercedes-Benz Zetros 2733 has a 6x6 design with three mechanical differential locks. The EarthRoamer company does offer endless customizability options, but RV manufacturers such as Newell offer the same.

Although the EarthRoamer has dimensions that allow it to be more agile off-road, it still lacks some of the functionality of a luxury RV. The Renegade Ikon, for example, offers almost double the horsepower for a significantly lower price. It is built on a durable Freightliner chassis and has one of the most luxurious interiors available for its price.

Some luxury RVs can top $2.5 million and offer interiors reminiscent of an opulent palace. These have the disadvantage, however, of being heavier and lower than the XV-HD. For long term off-grid living, an RV can offer much more comfort with a spacious interior.

Overall, the EarthRoamer is a premium choice with substantial efficiency. Considering the elegance of luxury RV and overlanding vehicles, it may not be the most luxurious option on the global market. This remains dependent on the individual customer's needs and their concept of true luxury. Deliveries for the 4x4 motorhome are delayed until late 2021. According to the company, there are currently a total of 5 XV-HD models on the road with 3 in production.
