Supercars bring unique experiences that you simply cannot get with mass-produced vehicles. If you're a car enthusiast, then you dream of the deep, roaring exhaust note, the heart-dropping acceleration, and the intense feelings you get as you approach a hypercar. At HotCars, we're in the business of driving cars. This means that our list of vehicles we've driven is long, and we have a lot of opinions - it's our job after all. It's never an easy answer when we're asked for our favorites or top five in a segment. However, some cars just lock-in a spot in our hearts and are forever favorites. My five top supercars all share a sense of grand theater and I have enjoyed unique adventures in each of them. Here is my Editor's Pick for the top five supercars I've driven.

5 Pagani Huayra Tempesta

I still can’t believe I got to drive a Pagani Hauyra Tempesta. When a Huayra arrived at my local dealership, I went to see the Pagani and talk with Chris Green, the Pagani Brand Ambassador. Out of the blue, Chris says, “OK, let me open the garage door then we can head out for a drive. I’ll drive it out for a few blocks then you can take over.” Surreal moment in time. The acceleration from the 6.0-liter AMG V12 and its 730 horsepower is savage and drives you deep into your seat. I did 0-62 mph in the acclaimed 3.2-seconds. The sound bellowing from the hand welded titanium exhaust is a visceral shock to your senses. The Pacchetto Tempesta is a dynamic package for the Huayra made up of new lightweight composites. For an extra $160,000 on top of your $3 million, Pagani will add a new underbody, new front splitter, and rear diffuser. New rims come forged and machined from aeronautic grade aluminum. Surprisingly, the Huayra is not intimidating to drive at regular speeds.

4 Lamborghini Murcielago

I created a supercar TV show called First Rides and I needed a couple of supercars to film a teaser video. Thanks to a generous owner, I was able to get a Ferrari 360 Modena and a manual 6-speed Lamborghini Murcielago for the shoot. It was my first time using supercar scissor doors, my first time driving a V12-engined supercar, and my first all-wheel drive supercar. Driving the Murcielago was a work-out from the moment you started the engine. Shifting gears through the metal gate required precision and smoothness. Lamborghini's interiors are not spacious, the sloping roof and windshield create a very cramped environment. At low speeds you have to put a lot of physical effort into maneuvering the Murcielago. It has blind spots you could park a bus into, so you are relying on other drivers not wanting to crash into a Lamborghini. Speeding down a highway with a Ferrari beside me was all my boyhood dreams come true. Looking over my shoulder, I could see the 6.2-liter V12 engine. Driving a Lamborghini is not for the feint of heart.

3 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

My second Lamborghini experience was a 3-year odyssey. I looked after a 2014 LP-700 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster. Where the Murcielago was very much a 20th century supercar, the Aventador is a Lamborghini for the 21st century. The heart of any Lamborghini is its engine, the Avendator has a 6.5-liter V12 engine that produces 690 horsepower. The Aventador does away with a traditional manual gearbox, replacing it with a 7-speed single clutch automatic. Leave the Aventador in automatic, or you use the paddle shifters beside the wheel to change gears. A gear shift takes 50 milliseconds and being a single clutch is a little violent. No folding hard top roof for Aventador Roadster owners. Converting from a coupe to a roadster means removing the two carbon fiber roof panels that weight just 13 lbs. and storing them in special clips in the front cargo area. A Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is theater on wheels.

2 Ferrari 488 Spider

Ferrari 488 Spider Blackbird Airpark Palmdale California

In 2017 my wife and I headed down to Los Angeles to spend four days in a stunning blu corsa Ferrari 488 Spider. We escaped LA and drove up to the Blackbird Airpark in Palmdale where I had the most epic photo shoot. I got permission to park the 488 in between the legendary Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird and its predecessor the A-12. I took a former SR-71 Reconnaissance Systems Office out for some high speed runs. We only managed to get to 145 mph which is nothing compared to Mach 3 which he flew at in the SR-71. The 488 was the first mid-engine Ferrari to use a turbocharged V8 since the F40. Power comes from a 3.9-liter twin turbocharged V8 engine that produces 661 horsepower. At the end of an epic day, my wife and I enjoyed a perfect moment in time. It was the two of us, our Ferrari 488 Spider, and a gorgeous California sunset.

Related: 10 Greatest Road Cars McLaren Ever ProducedOnce again my wife and I made a trip to Los Angeles, this time to borrow a McLaren 570S Spider for 24 hours. Mantis green is now my favorite McLaren color scheme. The 570S Spider has a 3.9-liter V8 twin-turbocharged engine that produces 562 horsepower. The 7-speed dual-clutch is a marvel of engineering with seamless gear changes. The party piece the 570S spider is the two-piece aluminum roof that folds into a compartment located behind the seats. The roof takes 30-seconds to fold and is operable at speeds up to 30 mph. This was especially handy when driving down Rodeo Drive. I could not get over how appealing the mantis green livery looked on the McLaren. Add in the theater of the dihedral supercar doors and the McLaren 570S Spider ticks all the boxes.
