An electric Ford Mustang is on the horizon, according to the chief engineer of the recently revealed Mustang Mach-E SUV, Ron Heiser. The American automaker has already created a prototype of a completely electric version of the fabled steed that gallops to the tune of over 900 horsepower (671 kilowatts). While that’s not an indication of what should be expected from a mass produced ‘Stang -- and there has been no official announcement regarding an EV version of Ford's pony -- it does suggest that it’s on the mind of the boys at the Blue Oval.

Speaking to Australia’s Motoring, Heiser said, “I can’t speak to that [Mustang Lithium vehicle]. But I think if you look out in the future – who knows what timeframe that is – the market is eventually going to roll over to EVs,” suggesting that an EV Mustang will be coming at one point, assuming the market makes the expected switch to electric.

Heiser explained that the recently revealed Mustang Mach-E’s platform is Ford’s new EV architecture, which is expected to serve as the foundation for many of the company’s cars in the future. The new platform is highly flexible, which will allow it to be used across a variety of vehicles of different powers and sizes. Nonetheless, that doesn’t mean an electric Mustang will be hitting the market anytime soon.
