Cars are for racing and vans for transporting people and goods — or at least that's what we grew to believe over the years. Yet, Ford decided to test and change the norms in the 70s and play around with the automotive concepts. When its Supervan first appeared on the market, the public went still. The vehicle was obviously a van, but it sounded like... a racer?

After the initial amazement settled down a little, the public got divided into those who liked the concept and those who thought of it as an abomination. It's no wonder why. The Ford Transit Supervans were, after all, vehicles with the appearance of a van and the performance of a sports racing car.

But there was no stopping Ford at this point. The German and the UK division were just getting started with their long and productive partnership built to improve the commercial van line, and the Ford Transit Supervans lived to see many successful years.

Much to our delight (as we don't see many similar rides get into production), Ford once again stunned the public with an all-new electric Supervan. Officially named the Ford Pro Electric Supervan or the Supervan 4 or the E-Transit, the vehicle makes a big return this year with the best race-car powertrain the series has ever seen.

Grab a seat and read on because the Supervan 4 will surprise you with its outrageous performance.

Where It All Started And The Evolution Of The Ford Supervan

The Transit Supervan was introduced in 1972 at the Brands Hatch Circuit racetrack in England. Surprisingly, it was based on Ford's record-setting race car, the GT40, and packed a 5-liter V8 engine. We can only imagine the public's surprise back then when a van that could reach a top speed of 150 miles per hour hit the track. But the general reception was quite solid, and the van grew in popularity over the years.

Because of the high demand and solid sale numbers, Ford continued to develop the Supervan, so the vehicle became even more powerful. Until the 2000s, about four million Transit vans left the assembly lines, and Ford had all the right to brag about its project. The vehicle ultimately reached the point to serve for commercial, personal, and recreational purposes.

In summary, the first Supervan was the original model introduced in 1971. The Supervan 2 and the Supervan 3 arrived in 1984 and 1994 with even more advanced specs and styling. But the big news is the Supervan 4, announced on 23 Jun 2022, which seeks to push the limits of a van even further and show just how much power can an electrified vehicle bring to the scene.

Take a good look at these photos. This is the new Supervan, fourth in the line, that promises delivery of about 2,000 bhp and 1,328 lb-ft of torque — and it's all electric! The team behind the project must be glowing with satisfaction right now because this vehicle shows that not only vans can be monstrously powerful, but they can run on batteries too. But let's finally explore the specs in detail.

The E-Transit or the Supervan 4 (it's hard to keep up with the names) accommodates a mid-mounted 50-kWh liquid-cooled battery to power four electric motors. This setup promises to produce 1973 horsepower and launch the van from 0 to 60 mph in under two seconds! Isn't that exciting (to say the least)? The van will also have an all-wheel drive system.

When it comes to the design, the E-Transit shows another advancement compared to its predecessors. The vehicle sports a more modern design, equipped with a full roll cage and racing seats (FIA-standard compliant). Inside, there's also a Sync display to help drivers operate the several available driving modes and push the van to its limits just like real racers on the track.

More specifically, the drivers will get to switch between the road, track, drag, drift, and rally modes with the E-Transit. There's also a Tire Cleaning mode to help clean and warm the tires ahead of the big race. But whether the van hits the track or not, it's certain to attract all the eyes to itself. Unmistakably van-alike but more like a spaceship than a road vehicle, the E-Transit is something different indeed. We already love its front splitter, rear wing, dorsal fin, and all the other elements and accents that make it so space alike.

Now, the E-Transit is a race van, but it still offers a lot of cargo space behind the front seats. Ford even plans to add a special electromagnetic cargo-securing system because let's face it, the cargo would fly all over the place at the higher power output — though we can't imagine anyone testing the van's full power on the road.

Anyhow, the new Ford Supervan blasted all our expectations with its powertrain and design. All that's left is to see how it will prove itself on the track, but we don't doubt there will be some new record setting.
