After months of teasing and concepts, Volkswagen made it official: the Volkswagen Bus is back. However, there have been a few changes to the infamous van for its revival.

The Hippie Bus Reborn

If you couldn't already tell by the styling, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz has returned as a fully electric microbus, which marks the first big change from the beloved original of the 1960s.

Power comes from a 77-kWH battery pack, which produces 203 hp and 228 lb-ft torque. There are reports that USA buyers may get a more powerful battery pack, but the Volkswagen press release doesn't confirm this. The press release also didn't state the range for the ID. Buzz.

What Volkswagen did tell us is that all 203 hp will go to the rear axle, and that owners will be able to charge from 5% to 80% battery capacity in 30 minutes. They also told us the top speed of the ID. Buzz will be 90 mph. Oh, and the weight of the ID. Buzz, which sits at an impressive 6,600 lbs.

Several other changes differentiate the ID. Buzz from its beloved brother from the '60s. For example, the ID. Buzz will feature over-the-air software updates, something the original microbus certainly didn't have. In addition, Volkswagen says that by 2025, the ID. Buzz will feature Level 4 Full Self Driving — a first for the Volkswagen Group.

Also coming with the ID. Buzz is something called “Plug & Charge,” which is a feature where the car and the charger communicate to avoid having to use a card or other methods to plug in your EV. Additionally, the ID. Buzz will also feature a technology called “Vehicle-to-Home,” which will allow owners to use their microbus as a generator for their homes.

Electrified Nostalgia

The styling of the ID. Buzz is extremely reminiscent of the famous hippie van. It looks like it would feel right at home driving to a beach with surfboards on its roof. Besides just sheer looks, the design is also rather practical, as the ID. Buzz boasts a drag coefficient of 0.285, similar to a regular car, which helps it get better range.

The interior appears to accommodate such a drive, as the interior sports a relaxing aura built to make passengers feel like they are in a living space rather than just a regular car interior. A three-row version is reportedly in the works, though Volkswagen only confirms a 5-seater version at the moment.

Besides that, Volkswagen will also offer a van version of the ID. Buzz, cleverly called the ID. Buzz Cargo. There aren't that many differences between the regular MPV and the Cargo versions besides interior spacing, and an available bench seat for the Cargo version.

Volkswagen didn't announce pricing in their press release, but the ID. Buzz is set to be in dealerships in Europe by autumn of 2022, with pre-orders slated to start in May 2022.
