The DeLorean DMC-12, or, for short, just 'the DeLorean' is a classic car left behind in the remnants of time. It became an iconic part of pop culture, establishing its place in the heart of collector car enthusiasts and fans of the movie Back to the Future. New rumors have surfaced, supported by a teaser from Italdesign, suggesting that we can expect to see a new design DeLorean sporting a modern-day electric powertrain.

'Back To The Future' Meets The Real Future

Many manufacturers have begun to make the shift to electric vehicles, some even going as far as announcing a complete end to the production of internal combustion engines within their factories within the next decade. Electric vehicles may have, once upon a time, seemed as though they were a part of the distant future to many, and when we think of cars and the future it's hard not to think about one that supposedly traveled there in a fictitious adventure: the DeLorean.

It isn't all that clear whether Italdesign plans on redesigning the already produced DMC-12 with an electric motor replacing the current internal combustion engine, or if they intend to build an entirely new car with similarities. It hasn't been all that uncommon in the past few years to see many enthusiast cars coming back to light, such as the Toyota Supra and the Acura NSX, and the teaser for the electric DeLorean may just be the first of many classic-cars-gone-electric.

Besides the tantalizing teaser video, Italdesign has yet to reveal too much information about their DMC-12 project, but they have given us just enough to be sitting on the edge of our seats. The 15-second video shows the car with the same gullwing doors that it's become iconic for — a feature only shared by a small handful of classic cars in history, and an electric bolt across the grille signifying that the car will become electric, living up to our modern-day expectations of new cars.

This won't go without controversy, however, as many automotive enthusiasts and gasoline-purists may share their skepticism over the announcement. Regardless, Italdesign hasn't given us much information regarding actual production yet.
