Since its 2014 launch, the i3 has always been one of the most futuristic-looking electric vehicles (EVs). The compact and stylish offering was BMW's first foray into the mainstream EV market. At launch, the car was available in two versions. The first of these was fully electric, powered by a rear-mounted motor. The vehicle was rear-wheel drive and had a 22 kWh battery. Today, the battery has been increased to 42.5 kWh. A "range extender" version was also available, this car came with a 647cc 2-cyl petrol engine in addition to the battery, helping reduce range anxiety.
Since its launch, the car has remained relatively untouched by BMW. Only a few subtle modifications have been made, such as reprofiled bumpers and new colorways. Here are some of the coolest features in the 2021 i3, the final version of the car. Production of the car is ceasing in July 2022.
9 Adaptive LED Headlights
As standard, the BMW i3 comes equipped with LED headlights. These units provide high light levels and low energy usage. As an upgraded option to the LED headlights, adaptive LED headlights are available. These adaptive lights work automatically to dip the beam when an oncoming vehicle is detected.
A clever "matrix" arrangement divides the headlight unit into four sections, and the car automatically controls which divisions are illuminated. This technology reduces the risk of accidentally dazzling an oncoming driver.
8 Combustion Engine Range Extender
Although the all-electric version offers a reasonable 153-mile range from a 42.2-kWh battery pack, that is not enough to satisfy those with range anxiety. While many buying the i3 may be able to get by using purely the electric motor, the combustion engine does increase flexibility. City drivers in particular are ideal users of the i3, electric running ensures pollution is minimized in the urban environment, and the car's compact stature makes navigating tight streets easy.
The range extender model makes it possible to complete longer trips, especially in rural areas where charging infrastructure is poor to non-existent. Weekend trips to the countryside can now be completed with ease. The range extender is reasonably priced, retailing for $49,295, it is only around $4000 more than the fully electric version.
7 Recycled Interior Materials
As well as helping to reduce the car's impact on the environment by eliminating the combustion engine, sustainable materials have also been incorporated, further reducing the burden.
The i3 utilizes renewable raw materials such as unbleached eucalyptus wood and recycled plastic, making it much more ecologically friendly than equivalent vehicles. BMW claims over 80% of the visible materials are derived from recycled or renewable resources.
6 Rear Opening Back Doors With No Central Pillar
In a similar fashion to a Rolls-Royce, BMWs engineers have incorporated suicide-style rear-hinged doors. The design makes entering and exiting the vehicle an easier proposition and is particularly useful in compact urban environments.
Making use of a carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) construction, the car is structurally strong. Consequently, a "B" pillar is no longer required, and the compact car benefits from reduced weight and an easier-to-access cabin.
5 BMW's iDrive 6 Infotainment
The centerpiece of the car's infotainment offering is a 10.25-inch, high-resolution touchscreen. As standard, the system offers in-built navigation and digital radio. Android Auto is not available, and surprisingly, Apple CarPlay is an optional extra.
Navigating the system is simple, and utilizes the familiar iDrive scroll wheel. Those who like their music will be pleased that BMW offers an optional, upgraded Harman Kardon system.
4 Driving Assistant Plus
The BMW i3 is available with several autonomous driver assistance and safety features. Unfortunately, all of these systems are only available as paid options, this is slightly disappointing given that many models come with these features as standard fitment.
Should drivers upgrade, they gain city collision mitigation, pedestrian detection, and forward-collision warning among other features.
3 Active Cruise Control
Included as part of the "Driving Assistant Plus" package, active cruise control aims to improve the safety of users of the i3. The system works by following the car in front and maintaining a predetermined distance.
The gap between the cars can be adjusted depending on the driver's preferences. For those people who feel uncomfortable using this type of autonomous system, a more traditional cruise control called "dynamic" can be selected instead. In fact, the car will revert to this mode automatically, if environmental factors such as glare are impeding the active system.
2 Alexa Built-In
Fans of Amazon's hugely popular voice assistant will be pleased to hear that Alexa has been integrated into the BMW i3. The system is linked to the Alexa app, which is available for both iOS and Android.
The system is far from just being a gimmick or bit of fun, it has genuine usability. Driver's can utilize the cloud-based assistant to improve their comfort and provide infotainment. Users can simply ask Alexa to stream music, podcasts, and audiobooks. A large benefit of using Alexa in this way is that it helps to reduce distraction, both hands can be kept on the wheel and eyes on the road. Among other things, Alexa car read the news, weather, and traffic reports. As the technology advances, more and more functionality will be added.
1 Parking Assistant
While the i3 may be a short and boxy vehicle, exactly the type that should be easy to park, its intended urban usage means some assistance is necessary. As standard, the car comes equipped with rear parking sensors.
Those needing extra help can option the "Park Assist" package. This upgraded offering includes front parking sensors, a rear-facing camera, and most excitingly automatic self-parking. Drivers simply have to push a button, and ultrasonic sensors will automatically identify suitable spaces as you drive along. Once a spot has been chosen, the car will parallel park itself.
