The Volkswagen Touareg is a 2-row midsize luxury crossover SUV produced by the Volkswagen group since 2002. It is named after the Tuareg tribe, who were inhabitants of the Saharan region in North Africa. The first-generation was developed along with Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 as both these companies come under the Volkswagen Group.

The latest generation of the vehicle is developed alongside the Audi Q8, the Bentley Bentayga, and the Lamborghini Urus; thus, this shows how much the SUV has progressed in terms of quality and luxury. The Touareg was offered with many engine options throughout the years, such as a 6, 8, 10, and even the powerful V12.

For 2022 Volkswagen boosted the Touareg with styling updates, and it has been labeled as the Edition 20 to celebrate 20 years of the iconic SUV. Throughout these years, the vehicle has won numerous awards.

One of the easiest ways to distinguish the Edition 20 from a standard model is just by looking at the paint shade. Volkswagen has introduced new paintwork for the Touareg Edition 20, called Meloe Blue. In addition, the wheel arches have been given a gloss black finish which makes them stand out even more.

The gloss black treatment is further continued on the rear diffuser, which does an excellent job of reducing the overall visual bulk of the rear. The vehicle also gets "Edition 20" badges on the B pillar, and they have a polished finish adding a premium touch. It also gets exclusive 20-inch gloss black alloy wheels and is called the Bogota wheels.

A unique feature happens to be the privacy windows, which means that the vehicle's side and rear glass have been completely blacked out to give the occupants some privacy. The large grill upfront is big and imposing and provides the car with a very muscular stance. Apart from these changes, the SUV is relatively similar to the standard model.

The Volkswagen Touareg brands itself as a premium SUV, and the interior feels like a great place to be as it oozes class. The premium experience begins as one opens the door as the back-lit entry sills display the Edition 20 logo. Besides this, black Savona leather seats and the Edition 20 embossing throughout the cabin add to the overall luxury factor.

The SUV also gets red contrast stitching and piping, which shows how special it is for the company. The gear selector also has the Edition 20 badging, and since this vehicle is based on the top-spec Touareg, it will also include all the bells and whistles Volkswagen has to offer.

In terms of tech, the SUV features Volkswagen's travel assist feature, which is the company’s built-in navigation system that is on par with Google Maps. A digital driver's cockpit and 15-inch infotainment system will also be offered as standard. The touch screen system will have Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, operated wirelessly. Other vital features include dual-zone automatic climate control, drive mode selector, and wireless phone charging. The vehicle will also have electronically adjustable seats to ensure a relaxing and comfortable ride.

Perhaps one of the best features offered by the Volkswagen Group is the vast engine options it provides in one vehicle. Even in the past, the Touareg has seen different engine options, and it works on one core principle, which is delivering heart-pounding power. The mighty SUV was once even offered with the infamous W12 engine and a 5-liter V10 diesel, rarely seen in modern-day cars. As of now, Volkswagen will offer four different drive trains for their prestigious SUV. There will be two V6 TDI engines which will be a diesel unit and a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder TSI. Lastly, the fourth engine option is a hybrid setup where the V6 engine will be mated to a battery and electric motor making it a plug-in hybrid. The hybrid version of the vehicle shall be the most powerful as it pushes out 375 HP and 442 lb-ft of torque. The SUV also can drive in pure EV mode, but the range figures have not been officially revealed. All the different engine options will be mated to the same 8-speed automatic gearbox, and all-wheel drive will be offered as standard.

For a car to be in production for over two decades is commendable. Although the Volkswagen Touareg has seen the highs and lows in the automotive world and still has managed to establish itself as one of the most premium and luxurious SUVs currently on the market. It is a shame that the Touareg is unavailable in the US.
