Yamaha makes some meanest-looking and most technologically advanced motorcycles. While beautiful Italian motorcycles score high when it comes to emotions and drama, Yamaha and its Japanese counterparts offer machines that are all about precision.

But this time around, at the 2022 Osaka Motorcycle Show in Japan, Yamaha unveiled a different take on "precision" and "sharpness" with the 2022 Yamaha MT-09 Cyber Rally. It is a visually modified version of the facelifted MT-09, co-worked on by Y's Gear. For those who don't know, Y's Gear is a well-revered aftermarket parts maker from Japan and is a subsidiary of Yamaha Corporation.

The makeover is majorly aesthetic and is a follow-up to the equally quirky 2013 MT-09 Street Rally. The 2021 MT-09 was already enough of an alien. Y's Gear takes it for another "flight". Mechanically, things remain mostly unchanged, and the conversion kit is already up for sale in Japan.

The Visual Makeover Reminds Us Of The Forgotten MT-09 Street Rally

Do you remember the 2013 Yamaha MT-09 Street Rally? It was Yamaha's way of being radical with the already quirky design language of the MT-09. Now, we have another creation made in the same image - the 2022 Yamaha MT-09 Cyber Rally. There are a lot of similarities between the two and a lot more, but the most important is that both look wickedly alien. The 2021 MT-09 was already bold enough.

Just like the Street Rally, the Cyber Rally also focuses on aesthetic mods, but there are a few mechanical tweaks this time around. The aftermarket kit, made by Y's Gear, is highlighted by the cool-looking handguards that double up as winglets.

It also gets a clear headlight cowl that covers the mean-looking headlamp assembly. Other visual mods include new tank shrouds that also aid in cooling by directing air away from the rider's legs and towards the radiator. The kit also includes a tail tidy, a new seat, and tank pads.

Mechanically It Remains The Mean MT-09 We Know Of

The power plant remains unchanged and the 889cc triple continues to churn out 117 hp and 68.6 lb-ft of torque. It continues to be coupled to a six-speed gearbox. But to go along with the new like, Yamaha and Y's Gear have gotten rid of the underbelly exhaust system and given it a side-slung Akrapovic unit.

This is sure to add more music to the package. It also gets a steering damper because you will surely need some additional support to turn that aggressive front end! All of these bits come together in the iconic Yamaha blue, and it looks dapper.

Zigwheels states that the MT-09 Cyber Rally kit has been priced at JPY 389,950 (~$3,183). To give you a perspective, the 2022 Yamaha MT-09 is priced from $9,499 in the US. That makes this futuristic kit about one-third the price of the motorcycle.

That seems like a lot for a kit that is high in visual appeal. But this is sure to sell like hotcakes in certain regions that have a cult following for the MT series. Yamaha hasn't officially confirmed a factory model with this kit though.
