GMC has been in the business of making trucks for a while now. And the Sierra 1500 has been a favorite amongst people looking to buy a full-size pickup truck. That said, competition is robbing its sales with the likes of the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 getting more market share.

GMC has given the Sierra 1500 a much-needed overhaul to stay updated in this hotly contested segment. With more emphasis on making it grander, the Sierra in its 2022 avatar gets a styling upgrade both inside and out.

Though the truck was sharp-looking, it did lag behind in terms of interiors. General Motors has addressed the issue by giving it a proper redesign. Now, the new GMC Sierra is equally eye-catching on the inside as it is on the outside.

The Denali is even more luxurious with “Ultimate” features, while the entry-level Sierra “Pro” gets a swanky set of LED lights that do the dance when you approach or walk away from the truck. The rather gimmicky idea is one of the many trends recently adopted by the automotive industry, and GMC is happy to have it employed.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at the newly updated 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 in detail.

One of the most noticeable changes for the 2022 Sierra 1500 is in the spec sheet, more specifically, the trims. While the familiar SLE and Denali trims are carried over, GMC has taken the liberty of adding in a few new ones.

Now, the Sierra Pro comes across as the base trim with MSRP starting from $32,495. Next in line are the SLE, SLT, and Elevation, which remain very much undisturbed.

Go further up, and the Denali is now available in two versions: regular and Ultimate. The Denali Ultimate demands a near $20,000 premium over the standard Denali with a starting price of $80,395. GMC hasn’t left out the off-road versions either.

For the 2022 model year, the Sierra gets the AT4 and a new AT4X model. The AT4 starts at $60,995, a tad cheaper than the Denali, while the AT4X costs $74,995, slotting nicely between the Denali and Denali Ultimate.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 has retained much of its available engine options. The V6 has been dropped from the lineup; the range now offers two V8s, a turbocharged inline-four, and a Duramax diesel.

Power figures are rated at 310 horsepower and 420 lb-ft for the 2.7-liter inline-four, a 20% improvement in torque. The 3.0-liter Duramax diesel is good for 277 horsepower and a whopping 460 lb-ft of torque, ideal for someone looking to exploit the road less traveled. As for the V8s: a 355 horsepower 5.3-liter and a 420 horsepower 6.2-liter are offered, putting out 383 and 460 pound-feet of torque, respectively.

In terms of transmission, the 2022 GMC Sierra gets an 8-speed auto for the gasoline inline-four; the rest of the lineup gets a 10-speed automatic.

If you’re a serious-off-road junkie, the torquey diesel should prove ideal. However, if your commute is more on the pavement, opting for the better-refined gasoline engine should be appropriate.

The Sierra comes across as well behaved and handles corners respectably. Further complementing its on-road abilities is the lack of judder or flex usually exhibited by body-on-frame designs. Of course, the Sierra is not something that entirely violates the laws of physics. After all, it’s still a fairly heavy truck.

The exterior receives quite a lot of upgrades starting with the wide and imposing front grille. Flanking its sides are a pair of LED headlights with integrated DRLs that follow the fender lines giving a cohesive look. The sides remain simple yet functional without too much going on.

Moving to the rear, GMC has opted for a set of vertical tail lights with lighting elements that make it instantly recognizable. Every bit of design is done with purpose, and depending on the trim, the Sierra gets loads of chrome and several badges.

For instance, the AT4 and AT4X trims get highlighted tow hooks and beefier off-road tires. Also, in terms of equipment, the 2022 Sierra AT4X gets quite a few options. Stainless steel rocker protectors and a full suite of skid plates are standard equipment, as are a set of off-road spec DSSV dampers.

As for the interiors, things have improved dramatically with soft-touch plastics and premium upholstery. Tech-wise, the 2022 Sierra is miles ahead of its predecessor and perhaps most of its competition. The 2022 GMC Sierra comes with a 13.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch instrument display. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, as is Bluetooth compatibility.

One of the highlight features of the 2022 Sierra 1500 is the available Super Cruise hands-free driving technology. Available as standard on the Denali Ultimate and optional on the regular Denali.
